I really wasn't sure how to edit the Deadpan Snarker entry. (I added the 'Averted' tag to it rather than removing it.) It's a complicated scene, and like most of the movie it's about how Neil doesn't know how to express what he's actually thinking and feeling, so you could defend the position that he's joking. But I think that, even though it might technically be lying, his expression that he would want more fuel was based more on his drive to make the mission successful than an attempt to make a joke to deflect his true feelings.
