Check the archived discussion on the FFVIII fanfic recs article here on TV tropes for the discussion that took place back when the rec first went up. I'm inclined to think that commentary away from the work itself is a more reliable cross-section of fan reaction than the commentary that's actually directed at the creator, particularly when it's on a forum that requires registration in order to comment. The actual rec on the fanfic recs article also has a Love It or Hate It warning that's been there for quite a while; that's what I was going by when I added the fan reaction line to the article here.

The description says that fan opinion is strongly divided. But I've seen nothing but creator worship on the thread, past the first quarter of the first thread.
