Are those the official English names of the Four Generals' mecha? I ask because they're suspiciously similar to the names of the Four Auspicious Beasts of Chinese/Japanese mythology (Byakko, Seiryu, Genbu, and Suzaku), and I'm not sure if they're puns or just the victims of poor translation.

Yep, their names are supposed to "resemble" the Four Beasts. The romaji for the mechas are visibly spelled differently: Byakō, Seirūn, Genbā and Shuzakku.
