um, oops. that entry for Omniscient M Orality License was meant to go under Zeus. I can't find it there, so I have no idea where I accidentally put it instead.
Hide / Show RepliesWhat is the source on the zodiac signs? I've been trying to find sources on actual ancient Greek astrology but all I can find is modern crap.
Hide / Show RepliesThe source of the Zodiac signs is the Zodiac Wheel, which can be seen at night Chronos the primordial god of time rotates it creating the calendar.
I know what the zoduac is I just want to know the source for what gods are connected to what sign. Online sources are contradictory which is unsurprising given that most modern astrology enthusiasts are woefully ignorant of mythology (they added Lilith ffs). I'm very interested in Greek astrology in its original mythological context.
Manilius wrote on it:
“Pallas (Minerva) watches over the Woolbearer (Aries); Cytherea (Venus) over Taurus; Phoebus (Apollo) the shapely Gemini; You, Cyllenius (Mercury), over Cancer; and Jupiter, you yourself rule Leo with the Mother of the Gods; Virgo who bears ears of grain belongs to Ceres; and the forged scales to Vulcan; quarrelsome Scorpio clings to Mars; Diana cherishes the hunting man part horse (Sagittarius); and Vesta the contracted stars of Capricorn; opposite Jupiter is Aquarius, the star of Juno; and Neptune acknowledges his own Pisces in the upper air.”
Leuce and Minthe being described as "Roman additions". Maybe for Leuce, because she's only mentioned by Servius (her name is still Greek tho). But Minthe's mentioned by Strabo, Oppian, Julius Pollux and a scholiast on Nicander, and those were Greeks. In fact only one of the authors to speak of Minthe-Ovid-is Roman. Additionally, a mountain in Greece (not Italy) where a temple of Hades stood was and is still called Minthe.
