If nothing else they could have refused their right and left a swarm of scouts to occupy the territory left behind. That would have been an obvious caution that wouldn\\\'t have taken much work even if they thought the Americans were coming from elsewher. As a bonus it would have made them easier to supply and to reinforce and allowed the Iraqis interior lines.
