Under the \\\"Violation of Common Sense\\\" trope, a troper noted that Claire\\\'s SMG does a little more damage when it has a suppressor equipped. This was followed by a claim that IRL suppressors work by slowing down the round to prevent it from breaking the sound barrier. This isn\\\'t true at all- in reality, suppressors simply trap and cool the resulting combustion gases and cause a more gradual change in air pressure, and will actually increase the velocity of projectiles fired through them slightly, since it acts a bit like a barrel extension. Any decrease in velocity found in suppressed munitions is the result of the round itself (heavier bullet, smaller gunpowder loads, etc.) rather than the suppressor.
