There's also an argument to be made that when stretching the definition outside of protagonists, it becomes harder to decide who is who's counterpart. It's easier to compare main characters coz they have the same role in the story.

That said, I do think the definition is being stretched when it's cherry picking traits from half a dozen characters to point them all as contrast. The (initial) intent was to contrast two protagonist who differ in many (if not most) points as a way to take a sequel in a different direction.
