When you edit a page, it is locked so other people can't edit at the same time. But to prevent you from locking it forever by accident (for example, if you forget to save, or if your computer crashes), there's a timer that unlocks it again after a while. That's what meant by the lock expiring. It's best to save your edits before the lock expires.

When you edit, you're keeping anybody else from editing that same page until that clock runs out. If you're not done by then, someone else can start making changes.

As a general rule, it's a good idea to always save your edits before the clock runs out. If you have a lot to do, either prepare it in advance to copy-paste it or save and re-start the edit, which will restart the clock.

And if the timer does run out, it can lead to an Edit Stomp.
