Was this a TV show or a movie? TV Tropes has a trope, "parental abandonment", hopefully you can find it there, and man, that father (if that was his father) sounds mean!
Can you remember anything else? Did the son have other relatives, friends? What else happened?

Very limited info- and this is more a detail/supporting background info on main character rather than plot
But a flashback shows son goes door to door in neighborhood looking for mom/asking neighbors for info regarding missing mom.
Later in life, older man (possibly father) taunts the son-now man saying something like, “I remember when you were just a boy asking people what happened to your mom.” He also said “She left you and didn’t even say goodbye.”
I believe mom willingly left to go to Florida or maybe was involved in drugs or prostitution.
This was likely on a modern drama, possibly HBO or Netflix.
