Do we have a trope for this?
For example, a king whose leadership is vital to the war effort is ordering his castle evacuated while the enemy overruns it. In order to save a small group of low-ranked soldiers, he ends up personally attacking the enemy while his troops flee, getting himself killed and leaving the country without a ruler in a time of crisis and thus far worse off than if he'd let the troops make a last stand so he could escape.
