I can only recall the plot but not the name of the film. It the story of a family of settler ( the father was a carpenter, the mother is pregnant and a son) that was on their way to start a new life at the western frontier. The story was told through a diary of the son that was pass down in the family. They arrive at their destination before all other settlers and befriend an old shaman who was following a bear. the shaman help the mother delivery the baby. They also meet a cowboy whom the son look up to and listen to his advice to use the money his father give him to buy a gun instead of a cow. The finale was that the family and their friend had to defense their house from a group of local gangster that though they were prospectors and have gold. In the end they defeated the gangster, the son found new respect for his father, th cowboy leave but gave his gun to the son( the gun became the family heirloom).
