I just worry that messaging them will turn into a debate of opinion versus opinion. Am I supposed to message the person who deleted it? Because I can't just message them plainly. It'll just sound like whining.
You can ask in the clean-up thread for more clarification on why it wasn't considered a valid example. Just be polite, and don't demand a restoration. The community works by consensus, though, so you should be prepared for things not to go your way.

Hrmm I'm looking at the only two people who were talking about it. Consensus was it was bad so it was removed. I don't want to edit war but it kinda urks me. I've had things moved before but not removed.
Talk it over with them in the thread, that's the best course of action if you think there's an issue

I just had one of my nightmare fuel examples deleted from The Loud House for the reason that my example "wasn't scary enough". I thought ymmv examples like nightmare fuel are there because it's different from person to person. Isn't deleting an example because you don't agree with it not kosher?
