This trope occurs in most anime, especially long-running shonen manga like Dragon Ball Z .Like, when Frieza first appears after Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta have used up the dragon balls and they just stare in utter fear like "n-no way-y! I-it c-c-c-cant be!" It also happened the same way when Goku first went Super Saiyan.
Or when Majin Buu first appears. Shin was utterly paralyzed, knowing the universe was doomed, while Gohan was just confused as to why. Then Dabura decided enough is enough then fought Buu, Dabura himself was paralyzed in fear when he realized his strongest attacks had no effect.
