I would say that if we don't have the "temporary king" subtrope, we probably ought to. It's quite common.

What do you call it when...? Someone is made king/god, but then, as they're beginning to enjoy it, it turns out the main regal/godly duty is to be sacrificed. Often happens to one of the heroes who gets separated from the group in a Lost World.
It happens to Jack Sparrow in POTC 2 and to the Hogfather in Hogfather. It might be based on ancient Celtic sacrifices. The second season of Angel goes a bit mad with adding twists to this one: Cordelia gets taken as a slave, but then made princess, but then she has to mate with a demon and it might be fatal, but he's a hunk....
