Found it: Edge Of Tomorrow. Pure coincidence someone else brought it up.
Should have made clear it wasn't animated, but I never saw the movie and don't know anything about the plot of or characters. Thanks for the help.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say it was the Tom Cruise movie "Edge of Tomorrow" which was adapted from the manga "All You Need is Kill".

There's a movie that came out a few years ago in the West, I think maybe in 2012, that was based on a Manga. I think it was pretty well received on Rotten Tomatoes.
