Sounds in part like Older Than They Think to me.

No, not Older Than They Think, because the more popular work is definitely a follower. And the follower doesn't eclipse the popularity of the original... it just becomes more popular.

For example, Captain Marvel was created as an Captain Ersatz of Superman because his publisher wanted to cash in on the brand new superhero craze. Despite this, for a while in the 1940s, Captain Marvel outsold every other superhero title being published, including Superman, the character he was based on.

Do we have a trope for that?

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.
