Text in Source view is not page's actual source, but is a slightly formatted HTML, without being safe unicode-cleared. Just putting </span> (and I assume other tags in your case) anywhere on a page allows arbitrary HTML injection in Source view, including running Javascript, which is a big no-no for websites.
