Isn't there some kind of background detail that the... prosperity, let's call it, of the lands gets switched every so often?

Nothing I remember.

Nohr is usually a barren land and Hoshido is the land of plenty.

Think you might be mixing it up with something else.

Granted, Nohr and Hoshido do have proper day and night times.

Like we see morning time in Nohr in BR chapter 15 after defeating Keaton.

So here's something funny for me: I only recently found out that Rune Factory 6 is being developed, and the trailer for the game shows a Japan-like setting where a white and black dragon seem to be in conflict.

Given how farming was brought up earlier in this thread, seeing that trailer not only made me think of Fates, but now I'm wondering what a Fire Emblem x Rune Factory game would be like.

I'm thinking that while the farming life simulation portion would definitely use Rune Factory gameplay, combat would be more like the turn-based strategy of Fire Emblem. The town would serve as the characters' base of operations, with the townsfolk being playable units, shop vendors, or both.

Heck, make that the next game in the series. It's an easy way to justify having fishing continue to be a part of the series.

@Kuroi Tsubasa Tenshi

I think Nohr's business and non conquering parts of it's society involves trading ore and valuables from mines. Presumably before Anankos took over, Nohr and Hoshido had some kind of trading relationship that Hoshido gets ore and gemstones while Nohr gets food.

Nohr also has vassal states like the Ice Tribe and Cheve. Presumably places like the latter have more fertile ground for growing food.

Maybe the Ice Tribe have like fish or something. I dunno.

If you want to know why why people would settle in a place like Nohr you just need to lok at real life. Everywhere that humans can settle, they will settle in some capacity. From deserts, tundras, jungles, mountains and swamps. Whether they're driven there by conflict, wished to leave their previous group, or simply needed more space for their population, no empty piece of land stays that way for long.

While true to a degree, I think people would have to be pretty desperate to settle in Nohr. There is a lot of empty space that is very undesirable. Just look at Canada and the US, where there is a massive amount of unused (usually landlocked) land. No one wants to live there. At best, companies set up temporary mining camps that get abandoned as soon as the resource is tapped out.

[up][up] It does make sense that the vassal countries could provide for them, but the question is how they mustered the strength to even build that empire in the first place.

Presumably the people who would become the first Nohrians had the Dusk Dragon to lend them their aid. My guess is that the Dusk Dragon helped build a solid enough foundation during Nohr's founding that the nation was able to last into the setting's present day.

Japanese site NetLab conducted a poll "What is your favourite FE game?", where each voter was allowed to vote for up to 3 choices. Remakes were paired up with the original games, and Fates is counted in it as the whole package. The results were the following:

    Rankings
1. Three Houses (1994 votes)

2. Genealogy of the Holy War (997 votes)

3. Engage (769 votes)

4. Awakening (652 votes)

5. Path of Radiance (628 votes)

6. Blazing Blade (620 votes)

7. Fates (557 votes)

8. Radiant Dawn (452 votes)

9. Mystery of the Emblem (442 votes)

10. Binding Blade (378 votes)

11. Sacred Stones (309 votes)

12. Gaiden (272 votes)

13. Thracia 776 (215 votes)

14. Shadow Dragon (204 votes)

15. Heroes (145 votes)

16. Others (28 votes)

there's some important things to take into account with the poll

  • the poll let you pick three choices as your favorite
  • the game did not ask which games you had played
  • apparently, (and this is knowledge i heard from another person so it might be false), but the emulation scene is borderline non-existent in Japan, meaning that any games not available on the Switch are inherently gonna get fewer votes
  • Genealogy is available on Nintendo Switch Online in Japan and was somewhat recently released iirc

so, the poll isn't exactly a very strong indicator of what games are genuinely the most well received/liked. the games available on switch are inherently going to have a very high ranking because those are the ones most people played by virtue of all being on the same console, and most fans would have started with Three Houses... a Switch game produced after the 3DS's life cycle.

Glad to see Awakening get some love, since when it comes to comparison discussions, it usually gets shit on in favour of Fates and New Mystery.

Such a big gap between Genealogy and Thracia strikes me as odd, but I'm also no expert on either game.

EDIT: Well, I guess that explains the Jugdral thing.

It definitely warms my heart to see Awakening is still liked by a lot of people.

Awakening originally released in Japan during a time when worldwide releases weren't common (if at all), so I worried that it would not be localized since the previous game, New Mystery, wasn't localized.

I would check the Nintendo Power magazines each month to see if there was any mention of Awakening being released in the West, up to the very last issue of the magazine (which still didn't mention Awakening). I was definitely happy when we did get official confirmation that Awakening was being localized.

It was one of the first games where I actually got the digital version because I was that eager to play it. And it was worth the wait. I sank so many hours into that game, and I still go back and play it every now and then. It's definitely still one of my favorites to this day.

i adore Awakening to this day. i have a lot of issues with it, especially its gameplay, but the "There's a better place to take a nap than on the ground, you know" cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game really hits home and it's honestly one of my favorite aspects of any game, ever

plus the child system is really fun and doesn't feel forced, Lucina is an absolutely fantastic characternote , and i really do love the whole cast of characters and the story

plus, the Gay Awakening mod makes it perfect and i really love the Bride class and hope it makes a return

What is the point of any poll if you're going to just have people going "ACTUALLY"? It's not like they can brain scan every person who has ever played a Fire Emblem game.

I feel like I heard that there is some kind of gap between Genealogy and Thracia, but I forgot where I heard it and is it just popularity or sale numbers.

Cheap validation?

Jokes aside, it is important to keep in mind that polls often have factors that should be considered before spouting off their results like gospel. It's sort of similar as to why those research papers they make you write in college must include how certain variables might have affected results or whatnot.

Heck, our cleanup thread for The Scrappy often has to remind people that scoring low on popularity polls does NOT mean the character is unpopular because popularity polls usually only ask you who your #1 favorite character is and does not take into account how much you like the other characters.

because its important to take into consideration the weaknesses of any given poll and how it might be misrepresenting the data its collecting

its important to critically think about data and "results" that polls and articles are claiming, because its very easy to mislead people, intentionally or not

like in this instance, the poll had a lot of factors that would very heavily bias towards the top 3 results, and the flaws i mentioned also explain the massive gap between Genealogy and Thracia even though they logically should be much closer

@Epic Bleye:

Genealogy is available on Nintendo Switch Online in Japan and was somewhat recently released iirc

Most of the old games in Japan have been available for a while in the Wii/Wii-U/New 3DS Virtual Console actually. The Japanese version of Brawl even allowed you to play FE 3 for 3 minutes like all the other bonus NES/SNES versions included.

[up] That's because when people speak fondly of Marth's games in Japan, it's likely that's due to having played FE3 rather than the actual FE1, which historically did not sold well and was only salvaged due to someone on Famitsu becoming a massive fan and promoting the hell out of it.

i never said they weren't. but the wii u/3ds are both dead consoles and have been since 3 Houses' release, which is the entry point for the majority of Fire Emblem fans

that's why it's relevant that Genealogy is on NSO- because most fans probably aren't spending money for old dead consoles and games that aren't being sold at major retailers anymore

its also why its relevant that Thracia isn't on NSO, because it explains why Genealogy is #2 and Thracia is at the bottom

Thracia is also infamous for having been released essentially on a dead console when everyone (but Kaga, ironically enough) expected the next game to jump to the N64 instead, so it's no surprise it's dead last too.

[up][up][up] Heh, even then Shadow Dragon got a remake on the DS. And they unveiled the ability to play the NES OG on switch with such extra fanfare. At this point I'm seriously asking why clearly any other game in the franchise would have been better suited for such special treatment.

[up] I seriously can't get over Thracia releasing on the SNES when the Gamecube was around the corner.
