We had info about Fates before it left Japan. Not officially, but there it was by dedicated translators. It was available there to translate.

Whereas it's been a total dry spell on Three Houses and any potential update/re-release of Warriors.

While I am a little disappointed that there really hasn't been any Three Houses news since E3, I'm not going to say it's due to developer laziness since I have no idea what's going on on the developer's end. Hopefully more information will come soon, but I won't be moping about the lack of news.

Still hoping to hear some things soon. Would be kind of funny if the next time we heard news is this year's E3.

As for a rerelease of Warriors, I don't see it happening any time soon. And I would really prefer not to have a "Definitive Edition" unless they were porting it to another system (like what Hyrule Warriors did).

Fates's only came about a month before the Japanese release. Yes, they got slammed by it, but the fact remains that it was pretty short notice. Not exactly the best of advertising campaigns. Awakening was definitely a little more aggressive, but still nothing crazy. And Valentia didn't really get that much attention. I'm struggling to even think of much of anything other than what showed up in Heroes.

Hyrule Warriors at least has the excuse of coming out on three different systems. FE Warriors would need a pretty significant upheaval to justify coming out on Switch again, to the point that it'd be better served by a sequel.

I'd be down for it adding Blazing Blade, Shadows of Valentia, and Three Houses to the fold. Maybe Ike and Roy as bonus characters in the same way that Lyn and Celica currently are.

  • Elibe: Roy, Lilina, Cecilia, Zephiel, Eliwood, Hector, Ninian, Florina.
  • Tellius: Ike, Mist, Soren, Titania, Elincia, Nephenee, Tibarn (or whichever beast people like), Black Knight.
  • Three Houses: Edelgard, Claude, Dimitri, Byleth, other people.
  • Bonus: Sigurd, Ephraim, Veronica.
  • DLC 1: Sue, Nino, Jaffar.
  • DLC 2: Micaiah, Sothe, some other beast.
  • DLC 3: Three Houses blokes.

There, well balanced focus games while giving some love to the remaining eras. Maybe not the best weapon balance, but since when did Fire Emblem care about that?

That seems like a lot, honestly.

Definitely something that could spiral out of control very quickly if that roster is being stacked on top of the first game's roster with the expectation of strong interaction between all of them.

Since movesets in FE Warriors are based around class rather than being character-specific, one thing that could really help mitigate the sword-lord issue is to give each unit a reclass.

Making, for example, Owain able to reclass into a Dark Mage isn't that technically difficult if you've got Tharja's Dark Mage moveset sitting around. The clone characters already recycle a lot of animations amongst themselves anyway.

It could work like the characters who had multiple weapons in Hyrule Warriors.

'Twas just an example. But it would be in reference to Odin, even though they're totally not the same person.

Tell ya what I'm gonna do, palsy: Here's a spreadsheet; first page is the current FE Warriors roster. Second page is a modified one I've devised. Feel free to add whatever characters, classes, ect. you want to it. Let's just have some fun devising a sequel roster.

Also, it's "laguz", not beast.

To be fair, that is how Heroes refers to them as units. Which is kind of a misnomer, since a large portion of them are birds or dragons. But I guess since there's a large portion of the audience that wouldn't know what 'laguz' meant just hearing it they decided to go with something more generalized...?

I imagine if we are getting a Warriors sequel with a focus on different parts of the series, the current ones gotta go completely to make room for the newer guys.

"Beast" is a generic term for animals, and probably the best term for Heroes; the Radiant Dawn cast are Laguz, but the Awakening and Fates ones aren't ever called that, so "beast" is a good catch all.

[up][up]And actually, the FEW 1 cast wouldn't go anywhere. The glorious thing about Warriors games is that because they're all lazily built upon their previous installments, they pretty much never drop previous games' characters in sequels. I think over the course of the entire super-franchise, there's only been like one instance of a character getting left behind and that was for extenuating circumstances.

[up] x2 Well technically, beorc did start as ambiguously humanoid animal things called Zuanma.

edit: [up] Wait... How exactly are you going to have room for diverse reputation if you're stuck with all of the same guys? Unless you want to make a roster with 40+ characters? And I doubt that'll happen.

You're underestimating just how gigantic Warriors games' rosters tend to get by the time sequels roll around. tongue

They always just take the previous game's roster and then add a whole bunch more on top of it, rather than scrap them and start fresh. Quick search says Dynasty Warriors 9 has, fittingly, 90 characters.

[up][up][up]It's a bit hard to gauge due to DLC and Capcom Sequel Stagnation trickling new characters in at a steady pace, and also varies from sub-franchise to sub-franchise.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors currently has three discrete games under its flag with no rereleases, and each game added 13, 14, and 10 characters respectively; assuming we just jump directly to FE Warriors 2 and don't get any fancy rereleases, it'll probably add around 20-24 characters before DLC, and 12-14 unique movesets between them.

To be fair, I only did the first ten-ish chapters in FEW while I was playing ZW (to compare the two games with one another), so maybe I'm missing good stuff that happens later on.

Yeah, sounds like you just missed one of the best levels in the game. There's a three way battle between the your characters, Ryoma, and Xander, in which you will lose if either Hoshido or Nohr gets too much of an advantage over the other. You really have to plan and think, and make use of the particular FE mechanics; indeed, this is generally considered to be the point where FEW becomes a very strategic Musou, much more so than HW.

A level or two after that is the one where Corrin finally enters the fray, and that one is also really interesting IMNAAHO, though I won't say why because the opening in particular took me by surprise.

In other news, I've played the first few maps of Gaiden and found my first shrine. Initial thoughts are that this game looks a lot better than Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and shows what the NES is capable of when pushed. The dungeons are an interesting idea, and my starting squad doesn't seem to have a single Jeigen on it. The interface has also been refined, with more menu options and the apparent ability for characters to swap items.

Not sure if it got lost in editry or if folks just don't actually care, but I made a spreadsheet here if y'all want to list what you want to see character- and moveset-wise in a hypothetical FE Warriors 2. First page is the currently-existing roster, second is for freely editing, with a few class-related additions I've made already added.

A lot of the early maps can also be gotten through very quickly and smoothly with strong strategy. I did a speedrun of the game a bit back and while the Ryoma versus Xander one was a bit of a pain to map out, Xander's was probably more annoying to figure out. A lot of stuff needs to be captured and the AI has an iffy time holding them. Xander also has to cooperate and not wander off (it's best if his assailants can be grouped with one of the Fort defenders for a fast musou kill). If stuff starts collapsing, the whole map turns into a slog that loses something like 5 minutes. Killer for a speedrun, but also annoying casually.
