Touhou is... good. Also the 10 year anniversary of this thread is coming up soon-ish.
Alas we never made that musical
Due to lack of ability to write lyrics
Forever liveblogging the AvengersCool... A 10th anniversary. It means I'm not too late haha.
Also, seems that some Touhou fans are pretty much creative on putting some songs in Cuphead which looks awesome :3
Not the best but not the worst either
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."Lyricalive is better than I’d ever have been so it’s ok
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWe never made the musical, but I'm just happy someone else is actually turning So PM into a play now, which was my other dream.
So, I decided to pull my drawers from my ass and went ahead with Genso. It took multiple runs of arming myself to the teeth with Fantasy Seal, Refined Green Teas, Grilled Red Bean Cakes, and anything that would keep me alive through both phases, but I finally beat the main dungeon.
I mean, for what it's worth, I probably wouldn't have finished Genso Wanderer either if I weren't playing it for free as a review copy.
Really? That’s a thing that is happening?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI was hired as a consultant for the script (or rather, I volunteered and then they gave me money at the end), and it's getting auditions from professional voice actors (no huge names though). It makes me all giddy, tbh.
Oh, right, it's just an audio play though, which I guess is a small step down from my old dream.

Anyways... Regarding Touhou, I kind of wonder if there are some games that has some story modes in it because well... The game is a bullet shooter after all (I used to mistake it as a horror due to Flan-chan's theme)
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."I mean there's a story in the shooters too. A little bare-bones, but it's there. Most of the details are in the manual though.
And of course the fighting games have their own story modes too, which are in rather more detail, and tend to tell a single complete story spread out over every characters' route (ie: they all happen sequentially).
And there are a lot of fangames with rather intricate stories. For example Fantasy Maiden Wars (Gensou Shoujo Taisen) which is a retelling of every game's story from 6-12 except really dramatically in a way that doesn't normally appear in canon.

That seems interesting. I mean, I'll be honest that I really want to know about the infos regarding the characters if they were truly existed in the story... I mean, someone DID put Yukari Yakumo as a Magnificent Bastard but I didnt know where on earth that user got an information from so yeah
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."...Uh, yeah, Touhou actually does have a story. The characters are part of a story.
If you're interested, there's a whole bunch of official artbooks containing short stories about the characters, often in the form of someone else in-universe writing an article about them as if they were real. Like Bohemian Archive or Perfect Memento. You can find translations of all this stuff on the touhouwiki, but be warned that the translation quality varies wildly.
There are also official manga you can read on MangaDex. Search for the ones written by ZUN for official stuff, some of the fan stuff is pretty good too though. Disclaimer: I've been translating those personally recently, so I am biased.

Makes sense... Probably gotta read it now although for the artbook, gotta read it later.
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."The SoPM I mentioned we were turning into an audio play is also one of the artbooks, actually (Symposium of Post-Mysticism). It's about 5 characters from the series sitting down and talking about politics and philosophy and it's amazing.

Oh right... I have to admit that I mostly know Touhou from its fan videos rather than the actual game itself so forgive me if my knowledge of Touhou seems nil... Needs more researching though
"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."I mean that's understandable. That's how most people get into it, right? And frankly having a bunch of "required reading" you have to do before you can engage probably seems kind of annoying, so we're pretty accepting of fans with limited knowledge, overall. By necessity, if nothing else.
I have to admit I was a little surprised that you didn't know it had a story at all though.
Yea :P
Anyways, like I said... I remember I got introduced to Touhou due to someone who made an Angry German Kid meme about Ran Ran Ruu and kept searching its origins until I found Flandre Scarlet, one of the characters of Touhou and made me think it was a horror RPG game but I was wrong.
Though I have to admit that Touhou kind of made me appreciate some Indie Horror RPG game in some kind of way.

Yeah, Touhou is a 20 year old series. Like any long-running franchise, it can be kinda hard to learn everything at once. Just take it easy. Go play the games, or watch some playthroughs that don't skip the dialogue. Read our trope page.
It should also be mentioned that the lore/worldbuilding is kinda... loose. So some things might not match up well with others, or not be concretely defined.

Embrace ambiguity.
Personally, there's a lot of popular Touhou music and ZUN ones being the standout ones. Although I have to admit that some of them are underrated as shit
