Nah Darkness just gives one GAINS. Riku even gets to show that off now with his new haircut after visiting the Realm of Darkness Barber Shop.

Riku looks less muscular in III then he does in previous games cuz he doesn't use as much DARKNESS
I know its mostly an illusion because his sleeves, but he also does look a little slimmed down and less defined.

One cutscene in the Tower and you csn see Riku has a noticeable bicep. Its the first thing I see when l see that.
Plus he still wields Darkness he just ins't edgy like Xehanort so no veiny bald creep when hes old.

Perhaps then, Nomura could have completely focused on Versus XIII and achieve what he actually wanted with the game.
I loved playing III, but it only existed because of the handheld titles creating plot-points that needed resolution. I wouldn't mind losing those games if if lead to a more focused development of Versus XIII.
KH 3 didn't even start develop till 2013. Not to mention the things for Versus XIII had been scrapped or altered, from staff being moved to XIV to turn it from a trainwreck to an actually enjoyable MMO game, the complete scrapping of the engine they had been designing, the switch to PS 4 and its graphics, Nomuras ideas that never even got off the ground, including his weird ones, etc.
There were many fundamental problems all around for Versus XIII and not working on KH 3 wouldn't change thati
I do have to go "Son of a bitch" when KHII Final Mix Xigbar journal hinted he had his own plans and motives, which BBS never really scratched the surface of. Not even the desire for a Keyblade really covers anything involving ones own plans.
