Interest is popping up in a Dwarf Fortress succession game, so here's a thread for that.

We'll need to decide on turn length, mods, etc. I'm thinking 1-year turns, with vanilla 40d16. I guess we can mod it to fix the injured cat bug, if that's still there.

Who wants a turn, and when? I'd prefer to take my turn in the third year or later.

Turn List:

  • Tom J. S.
  • Dr Rockopolis
  • Comonad
  • Shadow Warden
  • Syntic
  • Psyberian Husky
  • e X

I can go first. And we should do it either vanilla or with Dig Deeper, but it might get too hard.

Also of note: You can use whatever graphics pack you want, since it won't make the save file incompatible for other people.

I'll vote for vanilla. I'm more interested in seeing what trouble we get ourselves into than just trying to deal with harder monsters and bother with doing things that make sense.

At the moment we don't have anyone to take the second turn, which probably isn't a good plan. But if someone wants to take that, and Tom J. S is still up for it, that would be enough to get started.

Well, I've only done solo play before, I'm a bit rusty, and a Shrinking Violet, but I'd be willing to give it a try. How do you usually transfer the save? Email?

I'm still up for it.

We'll be compressing and emailing the save file I presume.

Cool. Tom J. S. is still first, then me, then Comonad?

Any specifics we want to set up first, like worldgen, type of site, how big the site is, etc?

I just checked, and it looks like my 6x6, 152 dwarf fortress is getting from 5 to 15 fps. Less then I remembered, but I've also got a lot of other crap running at the moment; might have had merchants, too. I haven't tried any of the accelerated versions or most of the speedup tricks, either.

Go for the accelerated version, definitely. The speedup is ridiculous.

I have no specific preferences for worldgen, site, etc.

Would you guys be okay with an extremely inhospitable location that has all the different goodies? No goblins or elves live there though, only humans.

I'm willing to play. I'll go whenever it's convenient.

EDIT: And lump on the inconvenient worldgen. It'll be a challenge.

Sure, I'm up for just about anything.

I must admit, I've never been too daring with my biome selections. Magma pit in the middle of a black sand desert was about the most exotic locale I've worked in.

My best fort was inside a massive glacier with a volcanoe. It fucking rocked.

Anyway, I found a good location that was somewhat easier than my previous one... still no considerable amount of minerals beyond the funstones. Now why did I find a new spot? Because Dwarf Fortress god damn crashed and deleted my year.

I don't know if spots are still open, but I would be interested in getting in on this. Though I do have some questions and a suggestion...

First the Qs: 1) Someone asked before but I didn't see an answer of how the actual sharing of the game will be done. So same question here. 2) What length of time frame are we talking to complete turns? Not in game but IRL. A couple of days? A week? Or are we talking a speed game where every one plays for an hour and passes it on to the next person?

Now on to the suggestion: I would suggest that none of the dwarves except for specific ones recieve costum names. Specifically what ones get the names? Well one per player, and they get to choose what one as long as it's not one with a name already. Why one per player? Well that Dorf represents their chosen avatar within the world.

We have as many spots as people want. I'll add you to the list.

Email sounds good for transferring saves. As for the time frame, I dunno. Quickly enough that the game doesn't get bogged down and forgotten about, I guess.

Dwarf avatars sound fun to me.

Doesn't matter to me. Do you want it to be a surprise? Or is there something I really need to know about this fortress, like "Don't pull that lever. Ever."

I did get us a mechanic but didn't get started on the underground maze yet, but I was thinking more for the sake of the Let's Play thing.

I need the email of the next person.

Report 1

I found it strange when the order of my next mission was delivered by a royal emissary, but didn’t think much of his armor and constant insistence of standing on the threshold rather than entering my office. I should’ve done what was expected of me and smashed that sod’s stones in, but back then I didn’t know I was going to spearhead an expedition into the freezing sodding north! There’s not much else to say, but at least I’ve arranged for one of the expeditionary dwarfs to take control of the situation. I really need some time off, even if that time has to be spent knee-deep on snow. Curse the giant cave bat! Curse it!

Either way. At my arrival I noticed that the local brook had frozen, and our forces were without water. With only ale to hold them (oh dearest no) I ordered the construction of a channel that would perhaps in time also serve as a moat, just in case you know. It didn’t quite finish, what with the other needs of my forces to be accommodated for. We constructed a grand entrance (which I may in time use as a trap for unsuspecting kobolds. Damn kobolds.) And created enough room to conduct our services and build up a fair little fort for the time being. Unfortunately most of my plans were ruined, when we struck into a deep chasm, so I had to redirect most of the roads and storage facilities. It should all hold together unless my apprentice decides to expand west-ward in the work district. It could ruin all my plans of a lava death trap! Oh dear, such wasted potential! I hope he reads this and makes sure not to mess it up. If he does, I might just drown myself in the well he most surely will construct. I also set up a fair brewery, along with lush farmland, so the food storages won’t be a problem for a long- long time. I’m curious though, the chasm indicates the possible presence of giant cave bats. Those fools worshipping that animal deity might just go over-zealous on us and re-open the wall I crafted with my own bare hands to release fiery guano upon us all. Damn cultists and their animals. Hail the dwarfs you sodders.

There are plenty of trees around, and good soil for future expansion of the farms, so I doubt my apprentice will have much trouble regarding resources. There’s loads of microcline too. Just in case he needs it. For… something… yeah. Oh, there’s one more thing of moderate importance: The hunters that arrived with the reinforcements from the mountainhome have most surely ran out of bolts. We’d have to manufacture some more, preferably from the bones of all the dead horses and goats out there. What the hell are horses doing up here anyway? I’m surprised I haven’t seen any sodding polar bears- but I shouldn’t speak of such monsters. Also, I don’t like to gossip or such, there’s an awful lot of spider webs in the current ‘expedition leader’s’ (it’s all fake, I tell you, that guy’s just a sockpuppet) bedroom. If you know what I mean…

That’s about it. Going to wrap up my stuff and let someone else take the stand. Hopefully he doesn’t screw up. One last thing: some random dude who was hitting on my lover drowned during his walk in the woods. I would prefer if you do not investigate his death.

Cool, the frozen north. Can't tell if it's a glacier or not, but it sounds like it's going to be fun.
