Then I don't really don't know how to explain it at the end of the day. I think you did a terrific job explaining the differences between Travis & Dante. Maybe I'm using the wrong word here but I get the same vibes from both DMC & NMH just like I would with Madworld. I suppose I just enjoy indulging in violent games even after all these years.
From bashing Dmc yet again to No More Heroes.
This thread is interesting.
Yeah. The big plot development in V is "Dante and Vergil realize they can keep score of whose more badass than trying to outright kill each other."
The B-plot is Nero and Kyrie's sex life is so boring that it's turned Nero into a workaholic, and by the end of the game finds a way to make said life less boring after beating his deadbeat dad in a fist fight.
Wow.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Who said Nero and Kyrie had a sex life???
And before you mention Sweet Surrender
Nico made that.
For Kyrie and Nero
but I dunno if they know how it's really meant to work.
Nero is Vergil's son, Vergil has demonstrated that he knows what sex is, ergo Nero also knows what sex is.
Nero probably does know what sex is of course...since people kept making fun of him while growing up for supposedly being the son of a prostitute. Meaning they probably spared no details about what a prostitute does for a living.
Something like that might actually have given Nero some issues concerning sexual intimacy.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI mean Dante's paradise is to be Dante. He doesn't want anything but to live like himself and good for him.
It's what makes him so cool. He's like the Dude.
Demon slaying and pizza are all he requires.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Dante is literally a crazy kung-fu pizza man who shouts "woo-hoo" a lot. He has no money, no particular friends, what few people might count as friends he's in debt to, he's a dick to children, he's a dick to his family who are even larger dicks, and he's irresponsible enough to keep powerful demon weapons on the walls of his shop.
And in most of Devil May Cry 3 he refuses to wear a shirt.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Not being able to pay utilities, too self loathing to attend a friendโs birthday party, still cannot think of any way to deal with his brother but killing himโฆjust because he doesnโt brood over it doesnโt mean he isnโt kind of a mess.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe only thing he can't Royal Guard is depression
Beneath the Stylish combat and pizza, Dante is a profoundly lonely man.
Disgusted, but not surprisedGranted, part of the reason he's avoiding the birthday party might be cause the girl has a crush on him, which is a bad idea.
Secret Signature"The party is no longer crazy."
Patty actually prefers younger guys. Her relationship with Dante is strictly platonic.
Disgusted, but not surprisedThe fact he can't pay the utility bills is just comedy, though. I get the feeling he might be too effective at killing demons, since his financial status only gets worse and worse over time.
Avatar SourceNo, he's just really bad with money. It's noted in other materials that he blows a lot of his money on those customized coats of his, among other issues. He also regularly pawns his Devil Arms for cash. One of the reasons Lady isn't interested in him romantically is because she has to bail him out often and she's turned off by the idea of dating a guy who isn't able to take care of himself.
He also has the same problem the Cowboy Bebop crew had — he has a tendency to cause so much collateral damage on his jobs that paying it off cancels out the payment.
It doesn't help that in most of the games he's not actually getting paid. Trish was luring him into a trap in DMC 1, it's never made clear if Matier and Lucia actually paid him in DMC 2, Dante hadn't even opened for business yet in DMC 3 before Vergil and Arkham wrecked his neighborhood with Temen-ni-Gru, and Dante was just trying to get his shit back from Sanctus in DMC 4.
DMC 5 is the only game where he actually gets paid.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSomeone should really manage his finances.
Might as well be Nero.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Morrison's the one who seems to make sure that Dante uses some of the money he gets from his jobs on basic utilities as opposed to just more coats and pizza. He also seems to be the guy who helps Dante get the jobs that have actual payouts.

Disgusted, but not surprisedKinda wish he'd get his shit together, really. Feel bad for him.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Seems like he'd rather take seemingly one way trips into Hell, though.
relatable
You don't have to have awkward conversations in hell. Can we join him?
Avatar Source*but then it turns out there is nothing but awkward conversations in hell*
I don't get it.
So was there a hard confirmation that Yamato can't open a portal from Hell? Because I could've sworn I read that the fragments of Yamato helped demons travel from hell to earth/world of the living.
Even if the evidence was there, mainly his background, I never really thought they did a good job portraying Dante's depression. It took 5 to show that Dante wasn't stable as he looked.
I really don't remember this. Was this back in the anime?
He also has the same problem the Cowboy Bebop crew had โ he has a tendency to cause so much collateral damage on his jobs that paying it off cancels out the payment.
Well, that & I'm told that Dante has used his money to help the novel characters' family as well.
That both series have leads with Hidden Depths and Character Development doesn't mean they have the same atmosphere though.
Edit:
It's rather poignant to realize that between the two, Travis is the one who has his shit together by the time of their latest games. He started out as a badass-wannabe immature loser, but by the time of NMH 3, he's become a genuine badass who has come to recognize how important friends and family are and has stepped up to become the genuine hero the world needs. NMH 3 highlights Travis' growth by pitting him against a foe who is just as immature as he was in the first game, FU.
Dante? Even by the time of DMC V he's still stuck in his rut, still trapped in self-loathing, and still struggling to pay utility bills. And when he meets Vergil again he still cannot think of any way to settle their differences besides fighting and killing each other (and neither can Vergil). It's up to Nero to smack the stupid out of them, proving himself to be more mature than his father and uncle.
