Yosuke being a homophobe is probably why he has such a vocal hatebase...I mean it's 2019. Being a homophobe is a prime way of not being liked.

His behavior towards Kanji would take on an entirely different context for sure.
And that was planned, at least. They got as far as dubbing lines pointing in that direction.

Like I think a character who is primarily a snobby teenage jerk would work really well? His homophobia towards Kanji was questionable back in the day and broadly unacceptable today but you could still mine an interesting story out of it, especially if it was how Yosuke was grappling with his own sexuality. Even without that it's still... well a pretty normal way for teenagers to act, as sad as that sounds. That's interesting, I think; that a character can be terrible and also a hero.
Ignoring the stupid Anime Shenanigans moments like forcing Yukiko and Chie to dress in swimsuits and trying to jump into their beds at the inn and wow now that I say this what the fuck is wrong with P-Studio, Yosuke is a fairly normal jerkface teenager who never grows out of it. That's annoying because he never learns anything from being an ass to Kanji, and you the player who influences everyone around you can't even do anything to stop him.
The bed thing was them actually planning to play a prank for attacking them in the spa.
Which was the guys time but they didn't care once they remembered.

Golden makes things a bit crazier due to another hot springs scene, but in that one Marie tops the girls by casting Ziodyne on the guys (Yu and Kanji resist elec while Yosuke and Teddie are weak to it).

I don't hate Yosuke, I'm pretty neutral on him really. But I can perfectly understand why he's not liked in the community; bro moments or not, nobody likes having their sexuality be used as a punchline. Something that Junpei and Ryuji distinctly lack...a bit.

Yea, that's what I was thinking about when I said that. I wasn't sure if Ryuji was like "no homo" or just didn't like being came onto period like that.

I would argue that he grows a lot over the course of the game itself, most if not all of the questionable stuff is very early in game and he doesn't have any issues later in the game.
Especially at the end of his s-link in which the two do beat the crap out of each other.
This not counting Arena which slams the reset button on everyone's character arcs HARD.

The Flanderization hits hard in all of the spin offs, so it's the version of the characters people are more likely to be exposed to than the original game

Junpei was disgusted when the transexual hit on them at the beach I recall.
Yosuke does this stuff as a surrogate for the protagonist excluding the "EW GAY". He's the mouthpiece when they discuss the case, when pervy stuff happens, and the lack of responses against it is because Yu wants to do it as well.
Yu unlike the EW G Ay however is more than happy to try to kiss Teddie and string along a middle aged cop.

Wait, what's this about a middle-aged cop that Yu can hit on? Is that what you meant? I don't remember this at all.
And if we're going there, I dunno what I was supposed to take away from Tanaka but I feel like he mentions how attractive he finds the P3 MC several times and you never really indicate a dislike of this or tell him to stop.
And Teddie is very pretty. I'd kiss him, too. It would also keep him from talking so a total win-win.

Yosuke would be a great character if he was ever allowed some introspection.
