Commander's Log - Supplemental

We made short work of the four-man crew of this vessel.

It wasn't a big sub, so we didn't recover terribly much in the line of usable materials. We did capture another live Aquatoid, though, and hopefully we'll learn something of value when we interrogate it.

Also, the new Ion Armour proved its worth today, as Siegfried Farnan took a direct hit from an Aquatoid's weapon and survived. Truly a remarkable piece of equipment.

End log.

Commander's Log - June 10, 2040

Shit.

Shit, shit, SHIT.

The sonar arrays at Redback Base picked up a large sub headed towards Antarctica. I dispatched Barracuda-Three to track its movements.

We lost the sub, but we found something else - another Alien colony.

This I need like a hole in the head.

Commander's Log - June 11, 2040

Picked up another small sub, this one touched down off the coast of Italy.

I'm sending Triton-One out after it; Barracuda-One will cover in case it tries to take off.

Addendum:

Well, the sub tried to make a run for it when the Barracuda showed up. Barracuda-One downed it easily, though it took some damage.

Triton-One is preparing to touch down nearby for recovery.

Commander's Log - Supplemental

We recovered a goodly amount of raw material from this sub. Not as much as we have from some, but more than we have from others.

We also captured another live Aquatoid for interrogation, but further interrogations will have to wait - I've had the science teams here working around the clock to unlock the secrets of the next level of Alien sonic weaponry.

Commander's Log - June 17, 2040

Another small sub was caught poking around the Antarctic, presumably looking for Redback Base. Barracuda-Three intercepted and destroyed the Alien vessel.

Commander's Log - June 23, 2040

It's time. The science team at Augustica Base has figured out how the Alien's Sonic-Blasta Rifle works - I've appended their reports to this log entry.

I'm issuing them to the team on board Triton-One, in preparation for the assault on the Alien colony near Neo-Japan.

Wish us luck.

End log.

COMBAT REPORT - JUNE 24, 2040

PART II: THE COLONY

Princeps: All right, people, this is the heart of the Alien operation here. We can expect heavy resistance, so stay on your toes.

(CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

Aldred: Heavy is right. I see one of those mutant lobsters.

Princeps: . . . Oh, crap. Okay, people, try to avoid contact with the enemy. Seek out the control center - if we can destroy that, it's game over for Echo.

(CLUMP CLUMP CLUMP)

(THUD THUD THUD)

Aldred: Shit! Echo's on top of me!

Princeps: Backup's on the way!

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

(KZAAASH)

Lobsterman: . . .

Aldred: Thanks, Princeps. That was too close for comfort.

(CLUMP CLUMP SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH)

Myst: Hello, this looks important. I wonder what'll happen if I stick a grenade in it . . .

(WHABOOM WHABOOM)

(ASSORTED ALIEN KLAXONS)

Princeps: Whatever you did, it pissed Echo off! Let's get out of here, people!

(CLUMP CLUMP CLUMP SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

(THUPP-BLOOP)

Arilou: . . .

Princeps: Yeah, yeah, fuck you too, Echo. We're outta here, and we're not leaving Arilou behind!

Side note: I discovered - quite by accident - that you can shoot away part of the railing around the "observation port" in the room above the Synodium Device.

This allows you to have an Aquanaut walk onto the device, drop an explosive of some kind (in this case, a Magna-Blast Grenade), and walk back into the room above the device. When you end your turn, the explosive detonates and destroys the Synodium Device, and you've effectively neutralized the colony without having to fight your way through hordes of Lobstermen.

(By the way, Arilou: even though I took your unconscious aquanaut back to the entrance lift, the game still listed you as MIA. Don't worry, though, you're still in the game - I gave your name to a new recruit since you didn't die on this mission.)

Commander's Log - Supplemental

All told, this mission was a rousing success. We didn't capture much of anything, but destroying the colony should deal a significant blow to Echo's plans.

Something strange did happen, though - Arilou was rendered unconscious, and Princeps Augustus dragged her back to the colony entrance . . . and from there, back to the submarine.

Yet, for some reason, the computer systems here not only list her as "missing in action", but also as a newly-recruited seaman at Augustica Base.

A most puzzling turn of events to be sure.

Yeah, those Lobstermen are a right pain in the tuchis. Thje only weapons that work well against them are stun weapons (e.g. the Thermal Tazer and the Thermal Shok Bomb) and the drills (Vibro Blade, Thermic Lance, and Heavy Thermic Lance).

. . . Which reminds me, I have updates in the pipe (including an in-progress colony assault mission).

I'm not even that familiar with X-Com outside of what I've read and I'm rather enjoying this liveblog.

Though I can't help but notice that the Aquanauts have... rather good aim.

Did their AI improve between UFO Defense and this game or are you just lucky?

Partly luck, and partly strategy - mainly one to minimize the impact of "panic attacks" (i.e., Molceular Control attacks meant to panic X-Com troops).

The luck part comes from most of the hired Aquanauts getting decent starting stats (40-60 Bravery, 75+ in both Throwing and Firing Accuracy, and so on).

The strategy part comes from weeding out troops that don't have good stats, particularly in the Bravery department. I tend to go for high-Bravery troops, as Bravery has a direct effect on Morale - the higher the Bravery, the less effective M.C. panic attacks are (or so it seems to me - the notable exception being Aquanaut Cousteau).

I always just have one recruit who goes into every mission with no weapon and make sure he has low psi-strength. It's kind of funny having him sit in the back of the skyranger having a seizure every 30 seconds.

I can't wait to see the final mission. That's a real knee-slapper, nearly as good as lobstermen cruise ship missions.

Commander's Log - June 25, 2040

Thanks to the interrogation of a captured Aquatoid Medic, we've learned what those floating brain-things are that we encountered at the Alien colony near Neo-Japan. They're a species known as the Tentaculat, and they seem to serve the same purpose as the Chryssalids of the First Alien War.

The only good thing about them is that they seem to be strictly aquatic, so we need not worry about mass Tentaculat infestations during Alien attacks on seagoing vessels, resorts, or port towns. They will, however, make short work of an incautious squad of Aquanauts, as they serve as guard dogs for Alien colonies and the larger alien submarines.

Commander's Log - June 30, 2040

Two more reports - one from the scientists, one from the Funding Committe.

The scientists' report is on the captured Lobster Man - a fearsome creature to be sure.

The Funding Committee cares less about our research and more about the destruction of the Alien colony. They were practically jubilant when they heard the news, and have given us a significant increase in funding.

Commander's Log - July 1, 2040

Another distress call came in today, this one from the Egyptian Cartel vessel Abdul Alhazred.

Triton-One is heading out to deal with this attack.

Commander's Log - Supplemental

I have to say, this mission may have been even more effective in increasing X-Com's standing than the destruction of the Alien colony last month.

We still have to deal with the colony near Antarctica, but it should be an easier matter to deal with now that we know the basic design of these facilities.

Commander's Log - July 3, 2040

Echo's launched another terrorist attack, this time going after the port city of Tripoli.

As the Egyptian Cartel is one of our biggest supporters in the Funding Committee, I feel it would be wise to deal with this situation post-haste.

Triton-One is en route.

Note to self - order a new Coelecanth, to replace the one that was destroyed in the attack on the alien colony off Neo-Japan.

End log.

COMBAT REPORT - JULY 3 2040

Personnel deployed:

Commander Kwas
Lieutenant Princeps Augustus
Lieutenant Myst Rose
Ensign dmboogie
Ensign nos
Ensign Jacques Cousteau
Ensign Siegfried Farnan
Ensign Guido Talbot
Able Seaman Arilou
Able Seaman Parson Gotti
Able Seaman Sophie Aldred
Able Seaman Virgil Griffiths

Yana: As Kwas has proven himself a capable battlefield commander, I will leave this mission up to him. This one is, in principle, much simpler than previous ones have been - find Echo, kill Echo, and come home.

Kwas: You heard the man! Move out, people!

(CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

Arilou: Echo near the docks!

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

Calcinite: GURRAGHOW . . .

(CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

dmboogie: Make that two Echos, Arilou.

(THUPP-CRACKLE)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

(CLUNK CLUNK THUMP THUMP THUMP)

Princeps: Another by those garbage cans.

(THUPP-CRACKLE)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

(THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP)

(WHIRR-CLUNK)

Griffiths: Nothing in this garage 'cept a bunch of old barrels.

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

Myst: Oh, how cute. Echo thinks he can shoot me in the back and get away with it.

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

dmboogie: Hey, Myst, got another diving suit up in that building over there.

Myst: I see it. Taking the shot.

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

Calcinite: GURRAGHOW . . .

(CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

Myst: Hey, Boogie? Got another Echo by that door.

dmboogie: Roger. Going for the kill.

(THUPP-CRACKLE)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

(CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK)

Arilou: Echo sighted, top floor of the warehouse. Taking the shot.

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

Calcinite: GURRAGHOW . . .

Arilou: God damn, I love this gun.

(CLUMP CLUMP CLUMP)

Griffiths: You're not getting anywhere NEAR me!

(THUPP-CRACKLE)

Calcinite: GURRAGHOW . . .

(CLUMP CLUMP CLUMP)

dmboogie: Echo by the railyard!

(THUPP-CRACKLE)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

(KSSHOW-CRACKLE)

(WHUMPH)

Aquatoid: EEEOW!

Griffiths: What the . . .

dmboogie: Echo's not too bright, Griffiths. They see a target, they take a potshot at it - even if they're standing by barrels full of flammable liquids. And if the shot hits one of those barrels instead of their targets, well . . .

Griffiths: Hilarity ensues?

Myst: For us, at least. Not so much for them.

(WHIRR-CLUNK)

dmboogie: Found the last Echo. It was hiding inside this building.

(KZAAASH)

Aquatoid: . . .

Kwas: Nice work, people. Bring everything back to the sub, and let's get back to base.

Commander's Log - Supplemental

This mission was a fair one, all things considered. There were civilian casualties, of course, but we managed to end the attack before too many people died.

We also captured another live Aquatoid for interrogation. Perhaps it will be more forthcoming than its brethren.

End log.
