Aw man, I was lucky to get the computer I did during the chip shortage.

At least it has the horsepower to run most games (even if the NVIDIA Ge Force RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU means it gets a little hot).

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48

Yeah, it's a good thing that crypto is tanking. Graphics card prices were outrageous for a long time.

I'll stick with upgrading for now. $300 for a new PSU + GPU is much cheaper than building from scratch, and it's not like I want to do streaming.

And my upgrade is live!

Everything seems to be working as intended. Only needed one minor adjustment in Settings. After which I started a new file in Stray and boy does it look pretty!

Now I think I can give Horizon Zero Dawn a shot.

Hey folks. You all have been rather quiet. Hope you are all ok or the nearest approximation. I am surviving on my overnight corner store clerk position still. I have stories to tell.

I just started a different position at my company, in hopes that it'll be more chill. And less mandatory unpaid overtime. So far so good!

But then I got exposed to COVID by one of my new coworkers. Gotta test tomorrow for that. If I test positive now, so much for family Christmas. We'll see what happens.

Doctor put me on a medication to control both the diabeetus and my weight.

Upside: I'm eatin' less and I feel great. I am off insulin. The injection site for the new meds feels like a mosquito bite (previously the insulin injection was "THE LANNISTERS SEND THEIR REGARDS!" level of pain).

Downside: Greasy foods are VERBOTEN - under this new med they can make me sick if I eat too much of them. Sugary snacks are still NO-GO as well. Also, a previous function that was...ahem...smooth is now....slower....I have to eat more fibre....

I'm still doing ok. Need to get back in school this next year though. Also this coming year I intend to start drawing again and hopefully get way better at it because I wanna draw my Cyberpunk RED Rockergirl/Solo character (she's my longest running TTRPG character, hitting two years I've played her in Nov)

So far that campaign is a blast; Drunk Scriblerian (if you all remember him) is the co-GM and another player in said campaign (we do a rotating GM thing)

Also Tuef, man we need to play some more Ghost Recon Wildlands again or something one of these days.

Scion: Oof. Fingers crossed you clear it.

Taira: Glad to hear that is working out. As for fiber yeah already down that road. Water-soluble fiber is nice. I hate psyllium husk fiber though.

Mark: Sounds awesome that is a good length to keep a character kicking. Creeping up on year two of my own D&D homebrew. We should roll out in Wildlands again sometime. My monkeys have been getting into Curse of Strahd and Lost Mine of Phandelver.

Ultimatum: <puts away the body poking stick>. A nap in a comfy chair sounds nice.

COVID test came up negative, so that's good.

Got a Christmas package to mail this week. Not that it'll get there in time, but better late than never.

That is excellent news. And yeah better late than never.

My dnd group doesn't meet again until after New Years due to work life and the store we play at running holiday schedules.

On the plus side, I get a 96 weekend (4 Day). I will likely eat supper with the inlaws at least once and I know a lot of sleeping.

My workplace requires everyone to work half of the recognized holidays a year, but at least they pay handsomely for it (automatic eight hours of pay for everyone, plus time and a half for any hours worked that day). This makes sense because we're a 24/7/365 emergency veterinary hospital, but it does not make sense for my job because I'm there to take emailed medical records from the clinics that aren't open on those holidays and add them to our database.

Fortunately, as my department only works Monday to Friday, we aren't been made to work on Christmas Eve/Christmas/New Year's Eve/New Year's Day. My colleague got stuck with a Thanksgiving shift before we were officially told that we didn't have to come in on the weekends just to fulfill our holiday quotas, so he's ended up working one more holiday than me this year. At least there was nothing to do so he got sent home at 11 that day.

Been dealing with plumbing issues this week. The drain pipe from my tub failed. My bathroom is above my living room, meaning that water pooled on my living room ceiling and poured down the inside of a nearby wall. And soaked the carpet.

Fortunately I don't have to pay for repairs. It's a condo situation and this is covered by my monthly fee. The drain is now fixed, but maintenance hasn't finished patching up the holes they made, so my living room is still in disarray.

Coulda been a lot worse, though.

I don't think the leak was going on for very long. Maintenance removed a section of drywall from the affected wall, and there's no sign of decay inside. Just water stains. But now you mention it, I may stick my cell phone into the ceiling to check out the condition of the joists.

Still watch it and it wouldn't hurt to spray some mold killer on the surfaces that got damp to be safe. Heard way too many horror stories of mold creeping in after the fact.

Preamble: my father left my mom for another woman when I was 2 years old. Here's the picture of their relationship, according to my mom:

  • Our family lived with his parents in even thought he had opportunity to rent a separate household;
  • And it was one of the conditions of the marriage - they've met in a different city, my mom had to leave a pretty nice job there;
  • The job she got in my dad's hometown was a lot less paying, no probs, dad's a working man;
  • But, his dad's (my paternal grandfather's) home policy was "pooling the resouces", meaning everyone had to give him all of their wages every month and he had a complete authority over how they should be spent. My mom literally had to ask her father-in-law for money to buy herself a pair of undies. When my mom complained to my father, he brushed her off;
  • The city we lived in had open bauxite mining. When I turned one year old, I've contracted asthma because of the poor athmosphere and we needed to move back to my Mom's hometown (an oblast center) to remove me from the harmful influence. My father refused to go with us stating that "[he] needs to be with his family";
  • We've spent a year in my mom's hometown, with him very rarely visiting us. Meanwhile, he hooked back up with his ex. When my mom learned of it, she confronted both of them trying to save the family. The ex said that he's been seeing her the whole time while they were married;
  • After the divorce, we were entitled to alimony. The amount of money we got from him showed that his income was way below the minimum allowed wage (it's the 90's in Kazakhstan, bear with me);
  • The whole time while I was a kid, there were no attempts from him to contact me or offer any kind of aid, or be involved in my life somewhat;
  • When it was the time for me to enroll in a university and I couldn't get scholarship, my mom asked him for financial help, he said (in court) "I don't owe him anything, let him unload the trucks, if he wants to study". Then my mom got so angry she filed to remove his parental rights from him. He complied without any issue.

Now, the story itself:

Around a year ago I got a text from him, saying that he wants to meet (the message started with "Son, why have you been evading me for so long?" What the actual fuck?) and I was actually willing to entertain him and talk to him. Because of the nature of their divorce, and because I was hearing only negative things for my mom, I got the impression that maybe at least she's not telling me the whole truth. Wanted to hear his side of the story. And even if what she's told me is the whole truth, and he really is the man I got the impression of him, he at least saw where he did wrong and maybe wanted to make amends?

Me trying to meet him lasted for half a year. He started it, then he was too busy to meet me, then, when I tried initiate a meeting myself he ghosted me. I decided I won't get any closure from him, thought "fuck it" and moved with my family to Turkey this January.

Then after a week of our arrival I got another message from him saying "I need to muster my strength of will to meet him" and that I have "got nothing to forgive him for, he did nothing wrong" because he's "not a bum, but a police colonel". Mentioned what clan I "actually belong to" note  and that I have "a lot of relatives". None of the relatives on his side save his cousin ever showed any support to my mom and me.

I've blocked him. I saw no point in talking to him further. I don't know what he wanted by trying to contact me and trying to reach me after all these years and I don't really care. I also knew I didn't want whatever grudges I have with him to affect my relationship with my own son (who's been born last October, by the way!) so I just accepted that he is what he is, accepted that I cannot change neither the past nor him. But I've also accepted that he is still my father and that some parts of his and his side of the family will be in me.

Congrats on the mini-you.

Family can be hard sometimes. My own father has been slipping into a perpetual fugue of bitterness and resentful hatred to the point he is willing to adopt some of the dumbest garbage he used to reject. Like turning fully anti-semtic and starting to embrace some weird nazi shit. I know he is not long for this world but I hardly have the stomach to go see them with him being like that. My mother wants to just nod along as it is the easy route.

My wife grew up without her father because he wanted to sleep around and not support the family, so her mother threw him out. Then my wife moved to the USA and now her father keeps trying to "reconnect" to convince her to give him money.
