I've clocked up 60 odd hours on FFXIII so far and haven't had any problems, but I just read in its article page about how it randomly craps out and bricks your system. I just had mine fixed recently ( its why I havent visited the forums for awhile), so I'm kinda scared to play it now. Should I be so worried? Is it a widespread problem or just a fault in a minority of discs? Have any Tropers experienced it? I really hope its a rare thing, since the game finally got good.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa!

You've clocked 60 hours on that thing? I gave up after 30! Good job!

Anyway, do we have any statistics to go with this? I'm sure you'd be fine.

There's a Gamespot article on it. Its not very encouraging.

I have played the 360 version for a while and haven't had a single problem... although I put each disk on my HD as I played.

Doesn't sound like it's very common (and the bricking even less so). Many people had quite thoroughly beaten the game before reports of that started appearing. I wouldn't worry about it.

It seems - from the posts I have read - that the problem's scale is not so bad. Basically, from what I gather, if one plays according to the console manual - letting the console rest after every hour and all that jazz - the probability of the "kill" is greatly diminished. It is thought that it is one of the reasons why there are so many Save Points, since the console does work quite hard reading the FFXIII Blu-Ray.

It could also be completely random, of course, but since You were able to play for sixty hours, well, I would guess there is little to fear. Also, there is not exactly much to be done to prevent that, other than exercising caution with play-time.

Well, good luck and have fun!

Edit: huh, ninjas everywhere.

I play it for 6-10 hours, no breaks. Then again, my repaired PS 3 now comes equipped with what I like to call the Giant Fan Of Doom, and doesnt even get warm, even if it does sound like a goddamn helicopter.

I guess its probably no reason to panic. The first i'd heard of it was today, and like Hylarn said, the game had been beaten inside out by then.

Played the PS 3 version through from beginning to end. No hardware issues for me.

Beat the game and clocked ~130 hours on it with no problems here. I saw that example posted and was going to zap it months ago, but decided to wait until I saw more examples of it than just some guy's blog where he may or may not be making up stuff. Even during the most QQ-filled moments of people on gamespot/ign/neogaf whining about the game, console freezes never came up. Still haven't seen any, but I'll let a higher authority do something with it if they can find better evidence.

My theory on it is that its just such a big game that people are playing it for longer and their blu-ray drives are failing. I once had a similar thing happen while playing Virtua fighter 5. I think maybe people's consoles are failing and they're attributing it to a fault in the game.
