I think partly that but I also think that Kenneth Branagh is rather unpredictable in his quality as an adaptor, including in his casting choices (sometimes including himself). Sometimes it works well, sometimes it doesn't.

Yeah, I'm not watching that. I was suspicious enough when they cast Judi Dench as Root, but getting rid of the Villain Protagonist and Grey-and-Gray Morality completely ruins the story.

It's not that I mind them marketing to kids; I just think they're underestimating what kids are smart enough to get. This was one of my favourite series' when I was younger specifically because of the Grey-and-Gray Morality, so I'm disappointed that they for some reason thought it was a good thing to dumb down the premise.
