Re: Revy's position- The problem with debating philosophies with her is it's like debating with a brick wall. No matter how well founded your arguments are, she'll just ignore them altogether. She has her mind set on what suits her desires the best, and as such, bringing morality points on her is a lost cause. It's a testament to Rock's capacity the fact he has managed such long term, yet microscopic progresses with her.

The fact the Crapsack World seems to play in favor of her views doesn't exactly help, either.

[up] Its because she starts from the standpoint, which IMO is correct, that NOTHING has inherent value. I haven't seen her Hannibal Lecture from the latest arc, but the one she gave on the U-Boat was in response to Rock's sickly sweet sentimentality that he should've known better not to try to use against her, so to me its justifiable.

No, see, the point was that Fabiola expressed the viewpoint that the world can indeed be terrible and that Revy is the one looking for fairy tale sweetness.

[up]I haven't read that one, but yeah, that does make sense, seeing how in the Tokyo arc she goes out of her way to try to preserve Rock's innocence. I don't want Revy to be a John Galt, always right Mary Sue, just that her core philosophy is correct. But I do think that she has value in other human beings, just that she doesn't like to admit to it.

That's not what I said. Revy deep down believes that there is good in the world. She was preaching to Fabiola about how terrible the world is and how a little girl like her can't understand that until Fabiola pointed out she does see the world as gray, and that Revy is the one who wants it to be (and thinks it actually is) a place where pure white as opposed to black can and does exist. Revy does not really believe her own position, it's a defense mechanism for her.

Revy may be a nihilist, but Balalaika is the real deal.

[up][up]Like I said, I haven't seen that yet because I don't want to be spoiled before the English dub of Roberta's Blood Trail comes out (Kinda holding out hope that they get the same cast as the series). I guess if Revy thinks the world is inherently terrible then she'd be just as wrong as if she believed it was inherently good. I think on some level she wants to deny how close she has come to those around her. I don't think the core philosophy of nothing having inherent value, which she expounded upon in her U-Boat rant, is wrong, but she does deny other things in which she has value, which to me is the problem.

[up]Again, Revy herself isn't a nihilist because she places value in things. Her problem is that she's lying to herself about to the extent of things she values.

You're kind of completely missing the point of what I'm saying, but whatever. Get back to me when you've actually seen the scene in question and thought about it.

[up]Its because so far as I've seen I haven't seen Revy bitching about how the world is a terrible place, more that its stupid to expect people to be kind. But I could see that in itself, expecting the worst out of people, to be the coping mechanism, and why she goes out of her way to try to preserve whatever shred of innocence Rock has left. Yeah, I could see that as being a character flaw.

[up][up][up] That had my Dad laughing out loud, which is extremely rare for him. This is pretty much his favourite series out of the anime I've shown him so far.

I don't know whether to think Hansel and Gretel are awesome or totally goddamn insane. Probably gonna have to settle on both.

EDIT: Okay, they're just insane. I'm pretty sure Rock said it best here.

I don't watch a lot of anime, but Cowboy Bebop has always been a long time favorite of mine, and I've read that this is similar.

For a guy that isn't a fan of most modern anime tropes, should I watch this?

It's closer to Pulp Fiction then Cowboy Bebop.

Think Tarintino meets Michael Bay with surprisingly good philosophy...not a typical "Modern Anime Trope" in sight.

Please tell me gratuitous explosions are the only piece of Bay in this equation. It sounds like something to get into if that's the case.

No, this has actual intelligence, even if a lot of the series is shooting and being cool. However, it's clear that the author is starting to struggle for ideas at this point.

[up]Ehh haven't seen past the Tokyo arc, are the plot becoming more contrived or something? Because the core of the story, Revy defrosting and Rock becoming increasingly pragmatic, would seem to write itself.

Regarding the manga, does anyone have any info about how the current Red Wild Card arc plays out?
