Er, would that actually solve your problem?
How is your avatar moving?? o___O
I removed it. The ani, that is.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyAs for my avatar, I just uploaded an animated .gif. Seems I had uploaded the wrong version, and by the time I actually made a post months later, I had forgotten about the "No animations, please" part.
[Edit: I'm trying to upload the non-animated version, and it's not working. Help please?]

Extra 1: Poochy Ain't StupidTry it again.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyWhich would have no effect on your ability to edit. Unless there's some other reason you want your IP hidden that you're not mentioning.

Hylarn: I believe the OP wants his IP address hidden so he doesn't have to use a proxy at all to hide it.
BTW, I'm a chick.Yes, exactly.
It doesn't affect my ability to edit, sure. But it's a considerable annoyance to have to use proxies now that my proxies are getting 403 errors.
A room temperature of 11 degrees has no effect on my ability to read a book inside the room, but I'd complain about the thermostat.

Extra 1: Poochy Ain't StupidI can see one logical argument for hiding users IPs; in most PHP blog and forum software, it's not publically visible.

Letting people see IP addresses is not a good idea at all. I'd forgotten about that.
All it takes is one script kiddie getting mad enough at another poster to try to DoS or otherwise attack them. Getting the user's IP is usually the first step in that process.
Everyone Has An Important Job To DoIf we hide the IP, what about posts on discussion pages made by anonymous users?
For known users only. Anonymous users would still be identified by IP.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"^Yeah. What we're asking is for it to be done like it is on "new wiki edits". Your IP is only shown if you don't bother to "get known" before making an edit.

Everyone Has An Important Job To DoYeah... I was unaware that ip's were shown until I'd already made a couple edits. If there isn't a way to undo what you did and erase the edit from the page history...

The new system has this covered now. Thanks Eddie!
Everyone Has An Important Job To DoUm, if you highlight the area to the right of your name, you'll see the I.P. Is that intentional?
Yep.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI'm presuming that that is so that IP s can be compared to see if we're dealing with sockeditors or edit ban-evaders who simply changed their name?
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Yes. We still need to be able to get at the IP address quickly, because sometimes (more frequently than we would like) have to slam the door shut right away.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyWhy didn't you just create a page to let the mods see the IPs, and not every other user, and thus still leaving them open to attack.
Instead of addressing the problems brought up here, you just hid them? And then you block all proxies so we have to edit with our IP exposed?
Honestly, if I didn't know you any better, I'd think you'd done it out of spite.

Everyone Has An Important Job To DoSometimes attacks are spotted by tropers who are not moderators. By moving the IP's so that only mods can see them you are ensuring that only mods will be able to identify the source of an attack. This also ensures that a vandal can do more damage.
Erm... what would stop the non-moderator member from just linking the mod to the page that was vandalized, so that the mod could look at that page's history?
Extra 1: Poochy Ain't StupidAnd then the mod would find all of the other edits made by that IP and then post the list so that it could be cleaned up?
Um, what?
The suggestion is to hide IP for logged-in users. Right now, doing a search for recent edits by an IP address doesn't show up any edits by logged-in users, even if they were editing from that address.
Thus, for cases where vandalism is done by an anonymous user, the IP address would still be visible to the public to identify the vandal. If it's done by a logged-in user, the username would be used to identify the user, and I don't see how the IP address would do much good to anybody who doesn't have the power to issue an IP block anyways.

Extra 1: Poochy Ain't Stupid
So I'm rather paranoid when it comes to security. If anybody's ever looked at my edit history, they'd probably notice that my edits have constantly changing IP addresses, since I use rotating proxies. It's worked reasonably well for me, but recently I've started getting some 403 errors when trying to edit, which I assume means that some idiot vandal used one of the same proxies I use and got the proxy blocked.
[Edit: Okay, maybe not, since there's apparently a "you've been banned" page for that, as opposed to a 403 Forbidden. So that's not the source of the problem.]
So could we please just stop showing the IP addresses of known users in the page history, like That Other Wiki and just about every Media Wiki out there?
