Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I was just about to make that joke.

I've decided to replay FF IV on steam.

Man, the chibi graphics are strange but weirdly charming.

No kidding. I like them a lot.

Plus Rydia's VA is great.

I always hated the graphics in the PSP-and-onward ports of the first six games (excluding III, of course). To me, they always looked like they were made with shoddy default RPG Maker assets.

The redone sprites for FFIV PSP looked nice but felt stiff and stilted. And the spell animations were running in the same issue as FFVIII's GF animation: pretty to look at the first couple of times, where's the fast forward button the next thousand times. Ironically, Flare's redone animation is shorter than the original's. Lackluster, too.

The character I care most about in the new VII Universe is Johnny.

If any of you are turbo nerds and played Xenosaga, I wanna see Johnny go down Allen's path where he starts off a total joke and numb nuts but ends up a badass who mouths off to Sephiroth and gets the girl.

After a ridiculously long amount of procrastination, I've finally finished FFVII for the first time! Although the game is by no means perfect and definitely shows its age in a lot of different areas, I still like many different aspects of it a lot, and the retranslation that I used definitely did it a lot of favors. I'm so glad that I gave it another chance!

Is the PSP version of Final Fantasy IV good? Also, is the After Years worth playing?

Yeah it's good. It's the best 2D version of IV, unless you have some specific problem with the graphical style. The After Years isn't very good. It's not worth getting on its own, but since it comes with the PSP version of IV anyway there's not much to lose in trying it out I guess.

After Years is fun to play. Story's a different beast and is generally not liked at all, but I'd say it offers a better gameplay experience compared to IV, for the most part.

The only thing I know about it is is Naked Golbez and that's just funny to me.

When it comes to FFIV you basically have two choices: the DS/PC/mobile version which is a 3D remake with voice acting and a newly translated script, and the PSP version which is the best 2D version.

I found out an interesting thing about FFIV yesterday via Legends of Localization: apparently, when the PS 1 version was released, the translation team basically just made stuff up at points and inserted pieces of dialogue that just flat out didn't exist in the original. These bits of dialogue actually then got passed down to the GBA and PSP versions, though those translations did improve things. According to Clyde Mandelin/Mato, the DS version's script is the most faithfully translated.

Can you choose endgame party members in PSP version? I remember being shocked this was an Advance feature and in the original you had to actually play as Edge.

Like, fuck that. I dropped him and Rosa immediately. All about that Yang aand Porom.

The PSP version is the GBA version with bigger, smoother sprites.

So yes.

The 3D version has the best presentation by far, in my opinion, but the difficulty was turned way up. It's really unforgiving. I'd still recommend it because the script is so, so much better than previous translations. That they didn't use it for the PSP version is honestly baffling.

The PSP version has more end game new content than the 3DS version. Plus you can fulfill every gamer's dream by putting Edward BACK in the party. That evil moon guy doesn't stand a chance now!

TAY's story starts interesting but quickly derails into nonsense and rehashing the original's plot. It fumbled right at the start by trying to get fancy and showing the cast in specific spots and situations when a global event happens to tease the player's interest, but as you play the game you see that the sequence of events is impossible (2 character tales side by side actually contradict each other's timeline). Only a couple of the new characters are utilized well story and personality-wise.

The DS version of FFIV's Graphics feel like a Precursor to Bravely Defaults, so that's a plus in my book.

Some brief interview snippets from Yoshi-p about XVI

Basically he once again iterates that the game will be action focused, and there will be a sort of “casual mode” for those who aren’t that good at action games and just want to enjoy the story.

Also Sony announced another State of Play happening this thursday, I doubt we’ll see XVI there but there’s a chance the rumored Updated Re-release of VIIR will be announced there.

Is there any game where Monk isn't like absurdly good as a class when it's available? I'm playing FFIV right now again on a whim and it's insane how much damage Yang does for the point of the game where you get him lol. I guess XIV where they're one of the trickier classes to play thanks to having so many positional skills.

Yeah, Monk's been low-tier for most of XIV's life, though I don't know how it fares after the recent rework.

Ya know, I can't believe I didn't realize for years that Boone from Fallout: New Vegas and Noel from XIII-2 have the same VA.

My only defense is Boone's voice is so subdued. I mean, Noel has had a pretty hard life, too but you don't see him being such a Debbie Downer.
