Its quite simple, what you desire is the power to take destiny into your own hands. All I ask for in return is your soul.

Humankind was not built to face true despair, the final breaking point of the soul before it collapses into total nothingness, a void to which even madness if preferable. And yet each day it is inflicted upon others, those who stand at the brink of collapse will be encountered by two forces all dependent on their fortune.

The first is the Servant of Nothing, the Empty Child. In the form of a young boy he offers erasure from the world, removing the soul from its victims and freeing them from all agony that they might encounter in the future. It then fills the now empty vessel left behind with a portion of itself, creating an 'Empty One', that seeks out the brightest souls and drains from them all semblance of life, spreading itself like a cancer across the world. These twisted shells can pass almost as humans, right until their monstrous forms become clear to see. Without a soul these beings are beyond human might, and thus any attempts to kill them through normal means will result in failure.

But hope lies in the second option, 'The Repentant', a withered husk wrapped in chains and bindings, a prisoner who carries their jail upon their form. It appears and offers a choice to those at the edge of collapse, offering a deal to them before the Empty Child can claim them. It will take on their misfortunes and grant them favor and escape from despair. But in return they must make a sacrifice and earn the life that they will gain from this deal.

If they accept the Repentant will remove from its contractors their very soul, crafting it into a tool before placing a hand on them, emblazing a number upon them equal to the pain it will undertake by changing their fortune. If they die without reducing the number to zero they will enter into an unimaginable hell. To reduce their debt they must seek down the Empty Child's creations and slay them, working through their debt until they are finally free.

In an endless war of hope and despair you are given but one chance to decide where you will stand.

In the end its up to you.

  • Name: Dr Clara Wright
  • Age: 29
  • Backstory: Once there was a woman who tried. From the very start she was pushed to study, to use her smarts to make something of herself to the exclusion of petty 'distractions'. It burnt her out, but she did get to graduation with a doctorate in Economic Development to show for it... And little if any obvious paths to turn it into a career. Inside and out she was breaking from the strain and how hollow she was from this one futile endeavor that defined her and... She succumbed to the despair. It is under the Repentant's offer that she gained what she needs, though very little of it was actually a changing of fortune that would incur a debt, because the only thing she needed was to survive the night of her collapse; purpose in stopping the Empty Ones and the perspective that happiness and care for others was far more important than single-minded bowing to obligation did the rest. Her debt is low, but she's resolved that when it's fulfilled she is going to continue to fight the forces of despair for the good of others.
  • Personality: Following her return from the shores of despair, Clara has gained a sparkling passion for life that sees her flitting from one hobby to another in an attempt to claim the life she was denied in academic obligation. It leads to her seeming a little unanchored, but the pursuit of the Empty Ones gives her a goal that her drive can focus on. Her life is not all combat of course, when the pressure isn't on she takes time to treat herself to whatever happy whim she has and more importantly work to help others gain the happiness that despair tries to deny them.
  • Relic: This cassette tape player with inbuilt microphone forged from Clara's soul is clearly not normal. Its make and model are more like the archetype of a funky throwback device than any real product and of course it's straight up magic. Instead of recording sound it records moments, actions Clara takes that she can later play back to create ghostly images that repeat the action. Clara mostly uses this to record full suites of combat techniques each morning, scrawling what's what on the tracklist as a reminder and using the tape later when a fight breaks out. Bonus, mundane tapes play perfectly fine (albeit without causing any kind of image) so Clara tends to keep a few tapes of her favorite jams to play through her headphones.
  • Appearance: Clara would be a short, unassuming woman that could be called mousey if it was not for her audacity in garb. She has embraced the aesthetics of her Relic, adopting a purposefully retro garb informed by bright colors and personal expression.
  • Etc:
    • Because her Relic augments rather than outright grants combat prowess, she's taken up martial arts classes in order to train herself to fight and is considering buying some kind of weapon. Optimally she'd like to have a big powerful and heavy weapon that would strictly be used for tape recordings and in regular fights she can use the lack of a weapon to be far more agile in deploying her images.

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

May I?

Name: Logan Ulbraucht

Age: 21

Backstory: Logan is a pretty big pushover. People could ask him for anything, and he would do it. As you could probably imagine, this was not a great trait to have when interacting with a gang. Logan helped a gang member when he was shot, and in return, the guy inducted him into the gang, where he was driven into more and more depraved actions, and he could never say no. His life was taken when a turf war erupted, and he was supposed to guard his leader. All of them were filled with bullets. Logan spent his entire life doing other people's bidding, to his detriment and slipping sanity. The Repentant then appeared, making his offer, and Logan took it readily, due to guilt.

Personality: Logan is an Extreme Doormat. He's friendly, cooperative, and never says no. He's against acts such as killing, but will do it anyway if asked of him. He also shrinks when people call him out or attack him verbally, letting their comments blow over though they hurt.

Relic: Thorned Ring. The commitment Logan felt to making people happy also constantly pained him, and that is made into this ring, a signet ring with a ruby on it, which is where the number is displayed. Whenever Logan wills it, darkness seeps from the ring. He can control it and solidify it, from creating cover to Combat Tentacles. There are more powerful, deadly attacks, such as rotting touch, but being part of the Bad Powers, Good People group, he never tries to use them unless necessary (or asked to.)

Appearance: Logan is has blond hair, light brown skin, and black eyes. He usually wears a white robe.
