<<< METROID: ROGUE >>>

Sometime after the events surrounding the planet ZDR and Raven Beak's rogue enclave of Chozo warriors, a team of heavily-armed bounty hunters has been dispatched by the Galactic Federation to investigate a seemingly-lifeless rogue planet, designation R-516, drifting just outside of Federation space. Attempts to investigate with autonomous probes have failed, and the planet looms ever closer to inhabited territory.

You are one of these hunters, and your goal is to explore the ruins on the planet's surface and delve into the mysterious catacombs below...

Gameplay-wise, this is a fairly standard rules-light play-by-post RP with an emphasis on interaction between players, PVE exploration, and story. It's ultimately similar in structure to a dungeon-crawler, with the primary setting being R-516 and its treacherous underground.

It follows the same sort of basic common-sense guidelines you've no doubt come to expect from games like this:

  • 0: What the GM (me) says, goes. I will do my best to mediate disputes and help all involved parties come to a compromise, but only if they are willing to cooperate in turn.

  • 1: Don't be a dick to other players or in general. Things that make you a dick include but are not limited to: transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism, prejudice based on religion or national origin, and personal attacks.

  • 2: I have the right to accept or decline any submission or bar existing players from participating for any reason, up to and including incomprehensibly-poor english and lack of competency as a roleplayer, as well as the obvious like bigotry and continued rule-breaking.

  • 3: One character per player. Duos, or two characters who work closely together, will be accepted on a case-by-case basis but accomodations may need to be made for balance.

  • 4: Original characters are preferred, but they can also come from established Metroid media provided that A: they're not Samus Aran herself, and B: it makes sense for them to be present given the circumstances and timeframe. These will be accepted on a case-by-case basis, at the GM's discretion. No crossovers.

  • 5: I am reasonably flexible with character power levels and am willing to work with you to adjust as appropriate.

  • 6: No powergaming or god-modding. Your opponent is to decide if your attack against them was successful, and vice versa. Relatedly, and although this isn't a hard-and-fast rule, your character shouldn't perfectly dodge or block every attack, or escape every situation totally unscathed—go with your gut for what seems fair and natural, I will hear your case.

    • Their knowledge of things should also be limited to what they would realistically know given their background or be able to deduce from available evidence. This does not necessarily align with what the player knows.

    • It's helpful to mark where on the planet your player is in your post; start with two exclamation points to create a header for this purpose.

Sign-up character template:

Name: Your Hunter's name, nickname, or designation.

Age: Ballpark, doesn't need to be specific.

Gender: If any.

Species: Your hunter's species. Can be a sapient one already established in Metroid canon, or one of your own creation. Cannot be Alimbic, Luminoth, Bion, or Bryyonian or any nigh-extinct 'precursor' race. Chozo are accepted on a case-by-case basis, as surviving enclaves are implied to exist throughout the cosmos, though they cannot be directly related to Samus in a meaningful way.

Appearance: Detailed but concise descriptions are accepted, as are images created by you or others as long as the original artist is credited and linked—this can be anything from 2D or 3D artwork, to Lego models you really like, and anything inbetween. Images created with tabletop miniature design apps like Hero Forge are accepted, as are the character creators in games like Cyberpunk or Saints Row. No AI art.

Personality: What they're like as a person, what drives them, etc.

Backstory: How they came to be a hunter under the employ of the Federation; is this their primary source of work, or a one-off job? Anything you think would be relevant to your character and their being here.

Powers/Abilities: Any superhuman capabilities your character possesses, be it natural abilities of their species or invasive augmentation. May be nerfed or tweaked as deemed necessary.

Skills: General non-superhuman skills and knowledge your character has.

Gear: Any equipment that isn't a natural or otherwise integral part of a Hunter's body, such as weapons, tools, and external armor. May be nerfed or tweaked as deemed necessary—general guideline is 'mid-game Samus'. This means that while your Hunter is definitely not to be trifled with, they also have room to grow, i.e. they're not going to have instakill endgame hyper beams or bottomless missiles or 99 e-tanks or invulnerable armor.

  • Be decently descriptive with the capabilities of your weaponry.
  • Bear in mind that R-516 has, at most, a very thin atmosphere and is quite cold owing to its distance from any star. Life support is a must.
  • also that's just an analogy stuff doesn't have to perfectly align with the games

Ship: How any good hunter traverses the cosmos and, by extension, arrives on this rogue planet. This will generally be a small, FTL-capable gunship-like craft capable of landing on and lifting off from planets. Make note of any weaponry or unique capabilities it has.

Accepted characters:

Coraz Lithios

Rick

Torhi

This okay?

Edited!

Name: Coraz Lithios

Age: Adult

Gender: Male

Species: Crocodylidae Armis. Also called the Armored Crocs. These crocodilian humanoids are amphibious, with scales tough enough to shrug off standard weaponry. They also have a nasty bite, and have a tail.

Appearance: A crocodilian humanoid who wears a black space suit that can shrink in-between the scales. He normally wears a standard shirt and shorts when he doesn't need the suit, even when hunting.

Personality: Coraz is a pretty tough-looking guy, and he can be a hot head, but he's pretty nice, and doesn't take kindly to insults to himself or others unless it's in playful fun. He is the kind who can be self-sacrificial to his friends. Even though he doesn't seem the type, he can also be quite introspective and smart, though he's forgetful.

Backstory: Coraz lived on the backwater world of Sluis, where the Crocs were tough and formed gangs in order to hunt the less evolved, but stronger species on the planet. Coraz is one of their best, and liked killing, especially to save his fellow hunters. One evening, a ship crashed on Sluis, containing a wounded bounty hunter named Suklr Lykewalae. The old bounty hunter was tended to by Coroz, and while Suklr was healing, Coraz showed him around the home, and Suklr found it different from other worlds. Less advanced. But there was a simple pleasure to it.

Eventually, rival bounty hunters came for Suk and held the village hostage, but Coraz and Suk worked together to take them all out. Impressed by Coraz, Suk offered to take him to the Federation, and Coraz accepted. They were a dynamic duo for many years, and Coraz was deeply saddened when Suk died a few years later. However, Coroz found the pleasure in hunting those that hurt others, and loved his job, sending souvenirs and recordings to his homeworld whenever possible.

Powers/Abilities: Coraz has tough skin that can shrug off most standard weaponry, he can breathe air and water, even when both are dirty (just not very very dirty). He can withstand most conditions due to the many, many worlds his missions take him, and he's strong enough to carry small ships. A minor ability he has is to subtly change his scales' color to camouflage himself against surfaces.

Skills: Coraz is good at fighting, whether hand-to-hand or marksmanship, from his many years of bounty hunting. He has great senses from being raised on a harsh planet, and he is a good tracker because of it. He is also a good cook.

Gear: Coraz' gear consists of his spacesuit/life support, which can also be used in any condition, and his ration kits allow him to survive for days. His spacesuit also includes a jetpack.

His weapons include a railgun, which can fire weaker, automatic-esque bursts, or be charged up for a powerful sniper shot that can bust through (steel), a laser pistol which can turn into a knife, a giant collapsible shield with automatics in it, and electric, retractable gauntlets to short out machines or just electrocute people. He also has two attack drones which he uses for recon or attacking.

He also carries bombs of all kinds. Explosives, Stickies, Anti-Gravs, Smokes, Tear Gas, the works.

Ship: The Golden Hind. A sleek, elegant ship that's quite fast and is not lacking in weaponry such. as automatics and missiles. Though it's structurally weaker, is is more maneuverable and faster than some ships.

Mostly okay, but I do have some concerns, namely that his weaponry seems a bit... one-note? And the invulnerable ship is a definite no.

Ship and gear are better, but some elaboration on the weapons would be good, such as roughly how strong they are or any particular properties they have—railguns are common sci-fi weapons and vary wildly in capabilities.

So the railgun can change firing speed and charged shots. Not charging it gives you faster, machine gun shots, but they are much weaker than when you charge it for a sniper-esque laser that can punch through metals with ease.

That clears things up! Accepted, though I'll wait until a few more have signed up before making the Discord available.

If this is still open,

Name: Rick, "Just Rick"

Age: 40-45

Gender: Male

Species: Human-based cyborg

Appearance: What's the first thing to come into your head when you hear the name "Old Bill"? He probably looks just like that.

Personality: Gruff, but not unfriendly.

Backstory: A salvager as far back as he can remember, Rick makes a living flying around in a converted tug and scrapping the free-floating debris from battles. If he finds anyone alive, he gives them a tow back to the nearest spaceport. Pirates, parasites, kiihunters, etc. are of course, just shot.

Occasionally, he finds something extra-special, and then comes the age-old Looter's Paradox: sell it for lots of money, or keep it to make yourself stronger. He's integrated what he needs of these into his space suit.

Powers/Abilities: Has a bionic eye that acts as a scan visor, allowing him to assess hazards, enemies, and choice bits of technology quite literally at a glance.

Skills: Microgravity maneuvering, tinkering/repair, consummate knowledge of salvaging laws.

Gear: A hardshell space-suit integrating a Federation Marines energy shield, a handful of Space Pirate guns all slaved to the same trigger (think like the "hillbilly minigun"), and a missile launcher with 5 shots. At the touch of a button, the missiles can be set to launch without firing the rocket motor, acting as a fuel/air grenade as needed. The suit is built for the interior of a gutted ship, where it will encounter sudden temperature changes, pockets of vacuum, and hard radiation, as well as the occasional Space Pirate recovery team, rival salvager, or frightened survivor. It also has a plasma cutter torch and a grapple beam.

Ship: Rick's ship is a converted tug intended to help maneuver bigger ships into and out of berth, but modified for salvage operations. While it retains the standard grapple beam projectors, it's been upgraded with a fusion torch for cutting through heavy hull plating, and a missile launcher to deter pirates.

So I did; that's been seen to. He's really suposed to be more of a "working Joe" with a dangerous job than a kickass superhero though, so his power is meant to feed into that.

Was interested when I first saw the RP suggestion, but then things got hectic... Are you still looking for players?

Also is there likely to be a problem if I haven't seen/played Dread yet?

Yes! And that shouldn't be a problem, as I don't imagine this tying to Dread much.

Sweet! I was kind of hoping that'd be the case given how the games usually go.
I ended up overthinking lore stuff and what worldbuilding I actually needed for my background, sorry once again that it took so long to post a signup.

Name: Torhi

Age: 20's

Gender: Female

Species: Fenirtan

Appearance: A redhaired, blue eyed woman with wolf-like ears and tail, tends to wear a tanktop, jacket and jeans when off duty. Torhi's powersuit is a slimmer, sleeker build than standard, with a white bodysuit reinforced with red armor and a blue visor/faceplate for her helmet.

Personality: Torhi has an aversion to rigid command structures and groups that, in her words "think the boss is the only one allowed to have a functional brain", but as long as her autonomy is respected Torhi has no problems cooperating with a group that shares a goal. Outside of that she is more upbeat than you might expect out of a mercenary and always gets a thrill out of exploring and seeing something new.

Backstory: Hailing from a planet in near the edges of populated Federation space, Torhi comes from a family of merchants who primarily made their living shuttling goods and supplies to and from various planets and stations and their homeworld. As a child Torhi was always interested in hearing stories about the places her parents had visited and the people they'd met and always begged to come along on the next trip, finally gaining permission to join them for her 8th birthday. During this trip their vessel came under attack by brigands and was crippled and boarded, with the crew and her family taken hostage. Fortunately a Federation patrol appeared before the criminals were able to harm their victims and was able to capture a few and drive off the rest. After this encounter Torhi's interests began to shift from the mercantile to the military, inspired by the heroic Federation troops that saved her family.
As soon as she came of age Torhi sought to join the Galactic Federation marines, but soon found that she couldn't stand their regulations and restrictions and instead took up bounty hunting as a way to combine her training with her thirst for exploration and freedom.

Powers/Abilities: Torhi possesses enhanced agility, allowing her to run farther, jump higher and and pull off acrobatic feats much easier than a human.

Skills: Rock climbing, experience haggling, and able to fit through air vents and smaller openings than hunters with bulkier suits.

Gear: Lightweight shielded powersuit with jumpjet for limited midair maneuvers, grapple beam set into the wrist and retractable claws for scaling rock walls. An automatic beam rifle with underslung grenade launcher and about 20 grenades worth of explosives that can be set manually.

Can't think of any good RL comparisons... But at least able to take a few hits safely despite wearing something closer to a Tokusatsu suit.

If our starting point is around Mid-game Samus, maybe Torhi would be closer to base-suit Samus with up 3-5 energy tanks? I imagine it'd take more energy to keep her safe than the more armored mercs.
