Yeah, I'm not sure.
The way most of those examples are written is fans telling nonfans to not watch/play/whatever because [insert reason]. Not the nonfans actively avoiding the media. Then again, at TV Tropes most examples are written by fans instead of randos who maybe heard about a work on the train.

I took care of the rest of the wicks, so I'm locking this. If you want to discuss the definition further, take it to Trope Talk.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.

@Hello83433: Removed it right before I saw you changed your mind to keep, sorry. Should I add it back, keep cut for now given it's problems (overly complainy, not explaining what about the ending was so reviled), or move it to the Discussion page to keep until it can be fixed? I'll do the latter unless I here anything.
I'd say lack of ending is only AAE if it causes audiences to stop caring to the point they stop clamoring for an ending as if they still want an ending they still care about the work too much to count.
@Mariofan99: Not sure it DP counts as while the League was the ending did it get the "visible even to non-fans" level of backlash or "retroactively no longer care about the series" reaction? I'll ask the series forum as well.
