Totally Not Mark is an Irish Youtuber who originally talked about only Dragon Ball but has branched out into other anime fields, such as One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and his current series, Berserk.

For the lead up Spiderman No Way Home, He takes a break from Manga reviews to review all the Spiderman movies of the modern day leading toit.

Starting with Sam Raimi's Trilogy:

After 150 videos being taken down by Toei, despite being under Fair Use Laws, Totally Not Mark has had enough and is calling out Youtube and Toei for this.

I saw that. It's really sad. They even took his drawing videos.

Why are Toei such dicks?

Out of morbid curiosity, I took to the forums in Japan to see what the general reaction to this is and…. yeah…. most of it seems to be against Mark.

That said, a lot of them seem to have the impression that Mark’s simply uploading the clips on You Tube and reacting to it rather than doing an actual review series.

I’ve tried to explain the situation to some of them, but eh, who knows if they’ll take a gaijin’s word for it.

Mark's situation is awful. I hope a swift recovering of his channel's content with minimal Youtube BS.

Slowly but surely, more videos are coming back, but who knows if they last long.

Officially moving on from this, He'll take a break for the rest of the year after the first half of the Amazing Spiderman video.

Mark's back with his full review of The Amazing Spider-Man duology. Mark is generally of the opinion that these films deserve to be Vindicated by History (even the second movie).

Did Toei REALLY copyright troll so much that Youtube themselves, mostly greedy sods that almost always side with companies, go "Ok, you need to knock that shit off now."?

I'm glad this had a happy ending for Mark.

It probably didn't help that some of the more overzealous Mark fans went after Japanese content creators that had no ties with Toei. That was weird.

Bah.

That's not how you do it.

I'm not sure if it's ignorance about the different copyright laws, a misunderstanding of what Mark is doing, or due to the aforementioned assholes trolling them, but I know that last one did not help all that much.

Apparently there was also a common misconception that he did reaction videos rather than reviews, even among English speakers. After everything went down, a number of people I follow or who were speaking on what happened to him expressed that a) they had never watched his stuff and b) they thought his channel was just for reactions.

That doesn't make any sense...

It does if you remember most of his critics don't watch Mark's content, so they have no clue that he makes his videos as transformative as possible. Reaction videos would just be a person watching the full episode and almost nothing else to make the video genuinely fair use. Also remember Mark lost his drawing episodes as well previously, which used 0% Toei footage yet where still taken.

Look at what happened to that Suede guy a few days ago for comparison. He's getting sued by shopro because his pokemon reviews aren't anywhere near transformative enough to avoid the copyright strikes he kept accumulating. He plays too much animated footage with plenty enough unedited dialogue that the minor things he does at the start and finish of his reviews aren't transformative enough to prevent the claims. You can say its still unfair what's happened to Suede, but he makes MUCH less effort than Mark in that department so I'm not surprised at the lawsuit.
