Misused: Sequelitis

A few weeks ago I began moving some lengthy examples I added to another article to Sequelitis. Recently, it came to my attention that some of these examples, and indeed whole swaths of the original draft, are inapplicable. At first it was a small issue of subjectivity and natter. Then it escalated to misuse. Some editors on ATT felt that it was unfair to include superhero movies, serials and tentpole IPs given that they were always intended to have sequels, and that "one bad film out of 10" is close to Seasonal Rot.

This concerned me. Luckily it seems that the crosswicks (for the most part) are correct. But the main article is still a jumble. A lot of it may need to be cut, especially the non-fiction examples.

The real problem is that there are no concrete guidelines. What constituents a bad sequel? The immediate sequel, or the fifth and sixth? Is it corporate interference? Financials? What if it was a hit but the audience turned against it later? What if it was a flop but later reevaluated in a better light? How long should each entry be? Should we exclude Executive Meddling or mention how it shaped audience perception? And what about video games? Aren't they serialized by nature? I could go on.

Sorry, ~burgerants, but we need actual evidence—not testimonials—that prove that the trope is misused.

Declined.

Also noting that we need to trim down the number of active TRS topics instead of adding more.
