The legendary first part, which is still by far the best of the series in my opinion, gets a full-fledged HD remake (while the other 2 parts "only" get some polishing)

Fuck, I'm so happy.....I played the shit outta that game!

Are they planning to improve the controls and load times, and the scarcity of the checkpoints? Those were the big gripes I had with the first Mafia title.

The graphical overhaul is seriously amazing though, doesn't even look like the same game anymore.

Thats because its a Remake, not just an HD remaster. New missions and all.

They redesigned Salieri and Morello quite a bit. Salieri both in voice and design originally came off as very grandfatherly, and Morello was super angular and very Obviously Evil. Which of course led to the twist that Salieri was Not So Different.

But since most people coming into the game know the twist by now, both of them look more human, and Salieri is has less of a "good guy" vibe to him. Interesting.

New video

Looks quite standart, and tbh, I really don't feel the redesigns of the characters, they look absolutely nothing like the originals.

Well it's the Mafia III engine. So the gameplay now has the option of being played with better combat and driving, which some people think it a step down. I disagree, though, because I think it will appeal to a wider audience.

https://sirusgaming.com/2020/07/22/mafia-definitive-edition-adds-classic-mode-that-fans-of-the-original-will-surely-love/

——

We have virtually spoken to Hangar 13’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Haden Blackman, about what hardcore fans of the franchise would expect aside from visual upgrades. Knowing that this is a full-on remake of the original Mafia, most will expect that it’s just an overhaul of its graphics with improvements in its gameplay fluidity.

“We’ve done a lot to make sure that the player base can choose the way they want to play Mafia,” says Haden. “One thing that’s most exciting to me is that because there are so many dedicated veterans from the original – they’ve gone in and made a Classic mode.”

“It has all the settings dialed into what the experience was like if you’ve played the original Mafia. so that’s great for the hardcore fans to experience the game at that level with the same driving controls, the police reacting to your infractions the same way. And then we go all the way to experience the story, you can dial all that stuff back.”

Haden reiterates they don’t want to disservice the fans and that they will not remove any elements from the remake of what Mafia great in its time. He also continued that with this remake, new players who played Mafia 3 or haven’t played the franchise at all will definitely appreciate the story that the team crafted way back in 2002 in current generation standards.

Stay tuned for our full interview with Haden Blackman!

[up]What exactly did they do to make it worse?

Only 3 rounds instead of 5, giving you even less time to make it to the top. The controls are also as clunky as ever and on top of that, unlike in the original, there is that extremely annoying commentator.

After 20+ tries (it easily took me 3 hours to beat it) his repetitive commentary will become a Most Annoying Sound definitely.

Just picked up the full series for PC. I'm surprised how well it runs. Little disappointed that there isn't much in the way of hair physics resulting in women having Lego/Helmet Hair, but it's ok. The game looks beautiful.

[up]Maybe it was just me or maybe there's another racing mission, but I personally got it within two attempts. Felt easy the first time only for the AI to rubberband on me in the home stretch. Second time I passed perfectly. Took just a little bit to get used to the handling.

Well, you might have trouble with the race. I'M having trouble with the fucking armored truck. JFC. I lowered the difficulty to Easy, Aim Assist to High, and even messed with mouse sensitivity. I cannot kill this armored Turret. Paulie can shut the fuck up; Shoot while they're reloading my ass. The truck doesn't have enough health to allow that and Tommy doesn't get killed by the truck; the truck's health is the part that can't surivive.

What's even further not helping is the absolutely random moments the game decides to chug making aiming even more difficulty with the gameplay and Paulie's horrendous driving. Fuck. This. Mission.

Yeah, that was a pain too, through some dumb luck I managed it after the 4th try.

Right after I posted, I dropped the graphics to the lowest possible and did it in one go.

Jeeze. This game can chug for no reason at times. I hope they optimize it a little better in coming patches.

Assuming we have coming patches?

Finished Mafia 1. Pretty good. My only real issue is that, while the writing has been filled out a lot more, I think they could have better expanded some aspects. Sam being the Final Boss made sense... but it also means that we don't quite get that satisfaction of watching Salieri getting taken down. Or anyone really confronting him on anything. Last I remember seeing him was before Paulie's train ride where he was satisfied lying to the leads. Or, we have some nice set up of some of the bar crew at the beginning only for many of them to never be mentioned again. Wished we could have expanded them just a little more.

On to Mafia 2 and... oh boy, Mafia 2 hasn't aged well and not just in graphics. Lots of "DARK, GRITTY, WE'RE SO SERIOUS GUYZ" writing... that's just childish in the decade since 2010. Like, all these extended shots of prostitutes dancing at a brothel (but this is also 2010 so these models and animations don't look good at all). Or introducing one of the characters having a speech... while getting oral sex rather loudly the entire time. OH! SO MATURE! SO SCANDELOUS! It's just so in your face it's hard to really like or care about the characters really. I just keep seeing the worst of the writing trying to be so "mature".

Which kinda also just makes Mafia look so much more mature, if shorter and a little simpler. It feels like a tight knit little package.

Only things I didn't really like about Mafia 1 is that the gunplay can feel unwieldy, the graphics would CHUG at random times for seemingly little reason, and I cannot stand the phone booth side quests and some feel almost impossible or the game just REALLY doesn't tell you what you're supposed to be doing. Like the "Speed" quest tells you to get onto the speeding bus... but doesn't tell you HOW you're supposed to do that. You need to drive next to it and the game will gave you a TINY prompt in the corner to switch cars; something done nowhere else in the game so how am I supposed to know? And all of these side quests are for... costumes that, while cute, don't have much purpose.

It's a linear game in an open world model. There's nowhere to go and little to do, so I'm not really spending much time roaming around.
