According to Square Peg, Round Trope, Were Still Relevant Dammit is meant for long-running franchises or series, but "people have been using it for any time a work attempts to be hip, regardless of whether that work is part of a long-running series or not." So The Emoji Movie, for example, does not count, because it isn't part of a long-running series.

Personally, I wonder what purpose this serves other than Complaining Whenever Long-Running Works Reference Things That Were Not Around When The First Installment Was Released.
