making a species

hey! i recently came up with a good plot, but the issue is that i dont have a species for the characters (they cant be people because i dont really like writing/drawing human characters, and they have a color-based system of ranking that the main character gets rid of).

im looking for help with species creation! the world is largely medieval, and these guys are one of the sentient species (other sentient species are 1ft insects). they have multi-colored fur and eat fruit, veggies & mushrooms. theyre about 1ft tall

my old model was anthropormorphic worm-on-a-strings, but the plot involves murder, and i dont think they fit anymore
