When you click on "Edit Page" the page becomes locked for 20 minutes or until you save your edits. If the timer runs out, the lock is removed, meaning that other users might edit the page too and overwrite your changes.
if it's a page that's unlikely to get edited by anyone else, such as an obscure work or your own Troper page, then it shouldn't really matter how long you take.

Essentially, the edit lock means that nobody else can edit the page while you're editing it. If they could, then your changes would be removed as soon as the other person saves their edit.
G5 sucks.
