So as far as I can tell, Joshikousei is a The Same, but More Specific version of Sailor Fuku where the trope is “Sailor Fuku worn by a cute high school girl,” as opposed to Sailor Fuku which seems to be “Sailor Fuku worn by anyone.” Apparently back in 2011 Joshikousei was supposed to be cut and turned into Sailor Fuku and Schoolgirl Slice Of Life, but only the first one was ever created. Is there some kind of nuance to the tropes I’m not getting here?

Joshikousei simply means "high school girl". They don't necessarily have to wear Sailor Fuku; in fact many modern Japanese schools moved away from it.

The description has a lot of focus on the sailor uniforms, mentioning that "the term is invariably used to refer specifically to cute high school girls wearing Sailor Fuku, or sailor suit-styled uniforms," and a lot of the examples focus on the details of the uniform rather than how the wearer is a cute high schooler.

[up] Even in Japanese media where the "otaku"-ness is thick, the term "JK" refers to any high school girl, sailor uniform be damned.

TL;DR we (TV Tropes) used the term wrong.

Right, so should the trope be cleaned up to focus less on the uniform? Because right now there's not a lot of meaningful difference between the example sections of this and Sailor Fuku, since most characters wearing Sailor Fuku are going to be cute high school girls anyways.

Hmm Joshikousei really should about well Joshikousei series, which would heavily intertwined to the CGDCT genre (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things).

Sailor Fuku should be specifically about the stereotypical and usually super generic uniform.

We probably should have a Signature School Uniform for the series specific unique uniforms. Such as each entry of the Persona series has a super unique uniform such as Persona 4’s checkerboard uniforms.

Edit: probably should add Joshi Chuugakusei as a redirect now that I think about it. In practice they are the same thing.

[up] You mean Joshikousei as a genre?

Come to think of it, what's the trope for "school story" as a genre in general?

A Joshikousei series is basically ‘a series about high school girls’, Usually 3 to 5 of them and guys in the series are extras at best. Ones about middle school girls are rarer but amount to being the same thing.

Most are CGDCT and comedies but there are occasionally more drama based ones like Sound! Euphonium.

Schoolgirl Series was mentioned in this thread, and it seems to be what you’re describing with a name that’s more comprehensible to people who don’t know anything about Japanese.

I guess, although that page needs some work. Its missing a lot of the well unique elements to the Japanese series have, especially the CGDCT series.
