That too would be an interesting twist. A Pixar movie without humans.

[up] I’m getting the feeling that they don’t, since all the fantasy creatures are basically living in a human society already.

Honestly, just from the premise and the little we gotten so far, I’m getting A Goofy Movie type vibes, which isn’t a bad thing.

Perhaps humans used to exist but disappeared/went extinct when magic vanished, it'd certainly be a neat reversal since it's the fantasy races who go away in those types of stories.

There is a series of Pixar movies without human characters. We just don't talk about it.

It's been 3000 years…

Saw the trailer, Chris Pratt had me sold. He seems like one of those Dn D players that take role-playing rly seriously - I'm wondering if that is what his character is, how would Dn D even work in this universe?

I get the insincerity thing. I see where that's coming from.

I'm also kind of worried that the Urban Fantasy feeling will just be... set dressing? Like a strange lens or framing for the story?

Like, take Monsters Inc for example, the entire story functions BECAUSE of the 'Monsters Under The Bed' concept. Every twist and turn and exposition works because of that concept. The story builds on it into this cool conspiracy-buddy story. You couldn't really set the story in a normal factory with normal humans without ruining how the story works.

I'm worried that the dragons being dogs and the Unicorns being stray animals will be funny jokes but... little else? And I get its a teaser and not telling much, but a teaser is still meant for judgement and I don't know why you'd hold that card back, right?

Also, there doesn't appear to be much worldbuilding. It just seems to be our world with fantasy creatures slapped in. Like how does a Mermaid move around in the suburbs? They just flop around? How do buildings accommodate for the size differences?

Compare that to Zootopia which showed in detail the city accommodating the different shapes, sizes, and habitats of the animals. This just looks lazy.

You are aware we’ve only just gotten a teaser right?

[up] Agree. I mean when Zootopia teaser came out it didn’t really initially address how exactly an animal society function in its first trailer and we didn’t get such world building in the movie. Hell the same can be said for previous Pixar movies Monster Inc. and University as when its trailers came out it doesn’t really address things like the lifestyle in the monster society, or that they use tech rather than magic to travel to human world (or time travel if you subscribe to the Pixar theory) or the whole demand fir screams due to an energy crisis happening jn that film’s universe (seriouslu all the first teaser for that film was John Goodman and Billy Crystal putting on a comeic schtick and that’s it).

So yeah, [up]x2 is expecting too much out of a trailer meant to draw audience into the world rather then explain what it is.

I have complicated reactions to this. It's great seeing Pixar tackle another original IP, but I really hope they don't explain how this world works too much because it's Low Fantasy, and shouldn't be explained, which means the story should rather focus on the characters and the story. Also, it ironically reminds me of every single Disney film ever made that is fantasy-related. Hell, you could tell me this was animated by Disney Animation Studios without Pixar, and i would totally believe it! The two studios are now making the exact same kind of films.

[up][up]The first Zootopia teaser didn't show the city at all, just the characters, so there was no way to gauge what it was like. Onward does show the setting of the world, so unless it is significantly different (which is doubtful, teasers might not show what exactly happen but they show what the setting is like), it's fair to criticize the depiction of the suburbs.

Still a teaser.

Teasers never show the whole picture, just a piece of it.

The Good Dinosaur shows how it can go wrong, though. The teasers were intriguing, promising dinosaurs and humans living together. What we got was a straight-up Western.

You could reshoot the whole thing live action with the dinosaurs as humans and the human boy as a wolf puppy without changing the script at all.

So I guess we'll have to wait to see what they do with it.

[up][up]At the same time, teasers and trailers functionally are there for judgement. They need to show off and tease what the film is about to get you interested. They expect you to judge it and want to see it.

I don't think we're wrong to look and judge it when a team of animators presumably spent weeks figuring out what to put in said teaser and had to themselves judge what to show us.

I would assume Zootopia's very minimalist teaser was so minimalist specifically BECAUSE the film probably was still going through massive production changes and they had little completed work to show off. But a couple of character models walking around a blank background with narration and GIANT BOLD LETTERS? That can be animated fairly quickly as long as the character models already exist.

Since Onward is using a lot of larger setting stuff and a lot of models, I feel like it's safer to say that those sets and characters are stuff we will see in the film, rather than stuff created just for the teaser like Zootopia's was. There's a lot more work and detail that was put into what we see in that teaser.

This tells me the bulk of the movie will be spent outside the town they live in, since there's talk about "going on a noble quest".

I was delighted to see the trailer uses The Cars' song "Magic"

This is the second Cars song in Pixar after Cars 2 had a cover of "You Might Think"

Both of these songs are from The Cars' album Heartbeat City, released just 48 hours after I was born.

My impression is that the movie will be a big Decon-Recon Switch. The whole setting will start out as cynical, with the fairy tale creatures in a modern day setting, and then eventually turn idealist, with the brothers discovering real magic and learning that there is childlike wonder in the world.

When the latest Dreamworks movie that isnt Kung Fu Panda or HTTYD manages to be more original and heartfelt than the latest Original Pixar movie something has gone WRONG.
