I know this mostly reaction to someone who is standing to a bully or situation only to come off as someone who is worse the their opponent in question but how do you avoid this trope for occurring?

Depends: are "you" an in-universe character or a writer?

I would say from the perspective of a "character"/reader. I noticed this trope for awhile and I wonder how to avoid it? I know that they are good people even if they are not the nicest peopleand even if they are nice nice, they still have a point especially if they know what they are talking about. I wonder if my reaction towards they person who who stood up to the bully or stopped the crime regardless of their feelings only to turn it right back at my face is the point the writer was making?
