This is going to be interesting. Maybe they could make them into a demented smurfs parody. But really the only way they could pull this off if this was made in the early 1990's, when they were in public conscious.
Maybe they are banking on nostalgia from the late 80s/early 90s? Lots of companies seem to bank on that nowadays.
That could be it.
Some new details were recently released about this prequel series, including the title (Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai) and 10 episode season count.
Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
Writing and production credits include some people from the Animaniacs revival:
- Tze Chun will write the script.
- Darryl Frank (“The Americans, “Animaniacs,” “Amazing Stories”), Justin Falvey (“The Americans,” “Animaniacs,” “Amazing Stories”) and Sam Register (“Teen Titans Go!” and the upcoming series “Animaniacs”) will executive produce.
- Chun and Brendan Hay (“Dawn of the Croods,” “Robot Chicken”) serving as co-executive producers.
- Dan Krall (“Coraline,” “Scooby-Doo!”) will serve as supervising producer.

Jasmine Goggins is working on the series as a revisions director . She was a storyboard artist for She Ra And The Princesses Of Power, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012, and Batman Vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Joe Dante is working on the show.
This is one of those things I didn't know I wanted until I knew I could have it. .
I'm honestly surprised they didn't make a gremlins cartoon in the 80s or 90s given that they made a ton of cartoon sequels/adaptations in those decades.
Part of the appeal of the Gremlins is that they are doing cartoon antics in live action with real consequences (like ejecting an old woman from the second story of a mansion at high speed). Like The Mask, except they don't care that toon physics don't apply to humans.
Being cartoons in a cartoon world kind of takes the edge off that.
Unless the cartoon itself isn't afraid of getting a bit edgy, of course.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).There actually was going to be an animated Gremlins series in 1990, and there was even a blurb about it in a magazine celebrating Bugs Bunny's 50th anniversary (a magazine I still have incidentally). However, the 2nd Gremlins film underperforming lead to the animated series getting cancelled.
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationThread title changed per request.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAn early Season Two renewal granted for this series.
It looks like Stephanie Gonzaga is a director for the series.

There will be something called ACME Night, a Sunday night block of family friendly shows and movies. The series will be shown on both HBO Max and Cartoon Network as part of this block.
I wish they'd reveal SOMETHING for this show already. I'm guess HBO Max will bother to promote it one month before it airs, just like their other shows lately?
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).You think they have something else planned given the Mountain Dew ad? which I know is kind of a weird thing to focus on, but still.

I am not sure how that would work, I like the Gremlin movies, but there is not much you can do with the premise, its why the second film is a parody of the first, Gizmo getting sprayed with water, creating more Mogwais, that turn into Gremlins and they go on a rampage till Gizmo and Billy Peltzer kill them. Lather, rinse, repeat. You have to add a lot of stuff to justify an ongoing cartoon series, like, I don't know, some human villain who wants to use the Gremlins for some sinister purpose.
I also don't know who this cartoon would be aimed at, the films have very different tones from each other (the first was more horror and the second was a straight-up comedy) and Gremlins was one of those films that helped create the PG-13 rating, so its not the most adult orientated franchise ever, but its not the most kid-friendly franchise either.
