I didn't see much point in the remix, so I'll pick the original for having a more rocking tone, like something you could dance to.
How about a TV theme song? How about Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats?
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationVery 80's sounding cartoon theme tunes, and very similar at that. Slightly leaning towards the cover, since it's a bit cleaner-sounding.
"All My Tears"
The original, by Emmylou Harris & Julie Miller
Emma Ruth Rundle's cover version
Spiral out, keep going. The original just has more emotion in the vocals, though I will admit the covers do take the music in slightly different directions.
No More Mr. Nice Guy
Alice Cooper-Original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE1vGT-hlLI
Megadeth (cover): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvdaWLOIsK4
Alice Cooper sounds a little more professional with acoustics and vocals.
And now a Beatles' classic: "A Hard Day's Night"

With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationNot being the biggest Beatles fan and knowing next to nothing about the Supremes, I pick the Supremes. Their version seems more dynamic and energetic.
So, who's got the best version of Diamonds and Rust?
Judas Priest have took the song, changed it into something that is in line with their own style while keeping the essence of the original. An exemplary cover, though I do prefer the original's mood.
"Cruel Angel's Thesis"
The original, by Yoko Takahashi
Spiral out, keep going.Interesting choice. I've only recently (ie the last decade) starting getting into anime. I love the NGE series but never liked the theme song. I generally don't care for most anime theme songs even if the scores/soundtracks are good otherwise (there are exceptions like Ghost in the Shell, Death Note and Cowboy Bepop).
I prefer the cover. It almost sounds like a religious hymn.
Better of Dead:
The cover seems more mournful which kind of fits actually.
Got the Time
Original by Joe Jackson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTIPCc1nKYQ
Cover by Anthrax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be7iNHw8QoQ
You picked one of the few Anthrax songs I love. Never heard the original until now. It's quite good and I'm surprised at how faithful Anthrax' rendition is, but Anthrax just blows it out of the water with thrashy energy.
Okay, time to move away from Metal. How about some blues. Who spins the best yarn of One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer?
Pretty standard blues pieces, but only the George Thorogood's one has the devil-may-care attitude fitting for an Ode to Intoxication.
"Rollin'"
Spiral out, keep going.Lounge Kittens win by a lightyear and a half. Original, I couldn't make out half the lyrics.
Going back to songs from stage plays, let's look at two versions of "Hot Patootie" from The Rocky Horror Show.
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationIt's very hard to vote against Brian May. But I'm going to side with the original, it's got a rawness that I like. May's version is very good, the sax and guitar solos are good, but it's too overproduced and clean sounding for my taste.
On a similar tangent to the last post, who makes your favourite things:
It's hard to comment on John's since it's just an instrumental, and for nostalgic purposes, I find myself gravitating to Julie Andrews' version.
Incidentally, Mary Martin was actually the original performer for "My Favorite Things". But her's and Andrews' are fairly close in tone (aside from Martin's sounding more operatic) it doesn't really matter I guess.
Saw the movie "Scream" recently, and inspired me to offer "Whisper to a Scream" next.
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationThe cover has more energy, but the original sounds more sincere. Now, it's time for a Fatal 4-Way!
Personal Jesus
Depeche Mode (original): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xrNaTO1bI
Marilyn Manson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rl6fyhZ0G5E
Johnny Cash: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYW3qng78E
Def Leppard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYW3qng78E
Your link for the Lepard one doesn't work. I dislike everything about them beyond their first album. It's okay I guess, through it's overproduced and lacks the rawness of the other versions you posted.
Manson's cover doesn't really do anything with it beyond the novelty of Manson covering a song. The original has a great groove and there aren't enough superlatives to describe Cash's talent. I'm gonna go with the original, with Cash's cover a close second.
Let's get some more multiple choice, going: Little Wing:
So, we have a classic blues rock version, instrumental blues version, hard rock-ish version and a version with folk influences. All of them give their due to the original tune, but I find Stevie Ray Vaughan's version the most appealing.
"I Let Love In"
Spiral out, keep going.I love Nick Cave but damn that is an amazing cover. I really like the fuzziness of Wolfe's version, it gives it a distant air. Let Love In isn't one of my preferred Cave albums so I'm gonna pick the cover by the thinnest of margins.
It's Canada day so let's do something related. Neil Young-Cinnamon Girl.
Damn, this is a hard choice. I love the original, but Type O Negative have made a great cover, sounding different and building upon the orginal's strength. The slightly heavier approach does the song good and proves Mr. Young makes nice templates for grunge. Still, I gotta go with the one that doesn't sound like the vocalist learned English phonetically, and that's a point for the original version.
"Head On"
Original by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Nonsense is better than no sense at all.Pixies take the already intense (and a bit too 80's-sounding for my tastes) original, squeeze the water out of it, compress it and keep its pure unadulterated essence. The cover wins in my books.
"The Sound of Silence"
The original, by Simon & Garfunkel
Spiral out, keep going.Simon & Garfunkle sounds like an actual song. The covers are ok, and I like how they sing in a more melancholy tone which actually suits the song nicely, but the first cover feels like it's in slow-mo, killing the emotion. And Puddles' performance is too stilted. So, definitely Simon & Garfunkle.
"Cleveland Rocks"
Cover by The Presidents of the United States of America
With all the memes about women choosing a bear over a man, Hollywood might wanna get on an 'East of the Sun and West of the Moon' adaptationI kinda like the cover by the Presidents, not sure why. It fits their silly style well. I always think of their Peaches song whenever I'm munching some down.
This song led to a deeper dive than I thought it would. Train Kept a Rollin'
I'll go with Aerosmith, with the Johnny Brunette being a close second, both of them are more energetic. Now it's time for Lemmy vs Lemmy!:
Hawkwind-Motorhead (original version):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOm_a8XcYsk&app=desktop
Motorhead-Motorhead:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AUVGrUTE-Q
Edited by J79 on Jul 11th 2019 at 8:07:03 AM
Once again a rather hard choice. Motorhead's version is very balls-to-the-wall, but I did not expect the Hawkwind one to be just as dynamic. I think their version is better in the end - they've got this tasty horn section, a violin comes in later, and I'm a sucker for violins in rock music. Also, Lemmy's voice kind of makes me want to take a lozenge.
"Highway 61 Revisited"
Nonsense is better than no sense at all. It's blasphemous, but I'm not a Dylan fan. Maybe take this with a grain of salt, I much prefer PJ's version. It's more dynamic and impactful.
I've been on a Leonard Cohen bender lately but I don't wanna do Hallelujah since it's overdone. So let's do the sultry I'm Your Man.
While I like the simple groove of the original and I think Hendrix doesn't get enough credit for his vocals, I do find that the cover conveys the feeling of being stoned out of your mind more effectively. So my vote goes to the latter.
And now, "Goldenslaughterer" from the OST of Umineko no Naku Koro ni:
Original by zts (10:12 - 14:16)
Remix by Taishi (10 minutes long)
