@DoctorWTF: Twilight didn't deal with them spreading racist BS in S9. They didn't realize they were the source behind it until too late, and by the time everyone came to there senses it still took a magical deus ex machina to stop the damage. The Aesop in S9 is that friendship would friendship would outlast Twilight and recover from such setbacks, which happened in A New Generation, not about preventing such setbacks from happening in the first place.

Despite spending over 1000 years teaching that being racist to each other would summon Windigos and pretty much kill them, they still became racist to each other continuing even after seeing the Windigos as proof. How they saved the day there did not deal with the heart of the issue or the illogical writing behind it.

If the problem is it proving the Mane Six were not fit to lead over Celestia, needing magical deus ex machina to solve such big problems, and the fantastical consequences and fixes to racism undercutting effectively dealing with the issue, then the comic is merely biting the bullet for FIM's failings.

Before compiling about how it could have done it better I need to see if it will explain exactly what happened that made them resort to creating the crystals and if there was any reason they had it happen so soon after the S9 finale as opposed to however longer after would make this acceptable.

@Afrovenator: G5 has the contemporary setting and technology that was the point of EG so why have an G5 EG?

Like Morningstar said, we could have Equestria Girls as a space opera. Joking aside, some Equestrian magic leaked into the EQG world. It would be an interesting story to explore.

Not to mention there's no guarantee that the show will keep any of what happened in these comics as canon. Which I suppose is another possible argument for waiting until the first season of "Make Your Mark" is released before evaluating the Fanon Discontinuity situation.

My main concern here had always been that the history between G4 and G5 might end up making Twilight look like she had passionately embraced the Idiot Ball. Here, the comics make no mention of her attempting a diplomatic resolution (or tracking down the pony who started the whole mess) before essentially blackmailing the ponies into being nice to each other (diving headfirst into drastic magical solutions is usually more Starlight's thing). Discord did leave out quite a few details, but what we have so far is giving me some bad vibes. Also:

The state of affairs at the start of G5 wasn't a "setback" so much as the aftermath of complete societal collapse - something a leader such as Twilight absolutely should be expected to do her damnedest to prevent. Though depending on how that part went down, it might not be the result of any real failure on Twilight's part.

Prediction time: the sidekick unicorn gets sent to infiltrate the town in preparation for as-of-yet unspecified ominous plans, but over her time there she starts to genuinely like the protagonists and assorted background extras and eventually forsakes her dastardly ways for the side of goodness and candy canes, thus bringing the main character group to an even two of each pony kind.

Kinda gives me Simba's Pride vibes.

Well, lets go through these quickly. I don't think these shorts really merit anything deeper anyway, and I've been delaying long enough as it is.

The unboxing of Izzy

Izzy gets trapped in a box and does a tour as a levitating wrecking ball, then Hitch finally gets her out again. Hitch also frets about her not enjoying the tour, but she did.

Clip Trot Becomes the Next Big Thing

A music video about... hip hop bunnies. I can't say I'm feeling this one. All the ponies dance to it willy nilly, and Pipp does not like it. Nopony is impressed by the actual dance moves, though. I can't blame them, it's kind of a stilted waggling dance with minimal energy. So everypony immediately bails on her.

And then Pipp starts pestering random ponies on the street to do the dance for her for content. Is this what it is like to have an obsessive Youtuber in your friends circle? I guess it is.

Oh, everyone is ditching her because the dance fad is already over. That's gotta sting.

Oh, and the internet is called "Canternet". That may be overdoing the pony speak a little.

And the next big thing is... the random dancing from earlier, to the same song. I don't think that's how dance fads work, right? You have to have a new song, at least.

Kinda fun, though it has some overtones of Were Still Relevant Damn It with the pseudo-hip-hop.

Foal me Once

Hitch is solving crime. I think. The "problem" seems to be a fallen over garbage can, though it isn't really explained. The bin also seems to be shaped like a bell, so I'm not sure how that is standing on end.

The bunnies have... unicorn horns? Okay... Well, at least they don't look like lint with faces any more, which is a much better look.

So is the short about that crime at the start, or just about Hitch being overworked? I'm not quite sure.

There are flying snails and unicorn raccoons too now. It's... weird. Kinda cute, I guess, but weird. The snails are more weird than cute.

Okay, so now things are going missing around town. What has that to do with the opening?

And there's more unneccessary rapping. These shorts are trying very hard to be hip with the kids...

The next day, Hitch is woken up by birds... screaming. Like, actually screaming. This short is weird.

Hitch finds all the stolen stuff in his office, and it's pretty obvious the animals have been swiping stuff for him. Of course it takes a while for Hitch to catch on.

Wait, why did the animals steal a painting? In any case, they covertly return all the stolen items, so that's all okay, right? I mean, it's not like you could put animals in jail for stealing... even though they seem perfectly capable of knowing right from wrong... So Hitch is basically aiding and abetting criminals in secretly undoing their crimes. So much for upholding the law, Hitch.

Wait, the animals are going to jail anyway? Then what was that about with having them return the stolen goods secretly? Either you don't want to punish them, or you do, but this is neither here nor there, Hitch.

It's T.U.E.S. Day

Izzy is lonely, and sets out to make a new unicorn friend. As in, literally make one, Frankenstein style. So next she goes around town annoying ponies with her puppet unicorn.

Trotformers? Cute. I don't know why Not!Fluttershy insists on sitting in the chair right behind Izzy and the doll when the entire theater is empty.

So it's not Tuesday, but TUE Sday, The Unicorn Expression of Sparkle day. That's... weirdly specific. Almost like a writer was shoehorning a backronym to make this gag work...

I'm not sure why her non-unicorn friends would be expected to remember a unicorn specific holiday, especially so short after the races even came back together at all. And yeah, if it has a weirdly confusing name like that, that is just... confusing. It's like calling Christmas "December 25th". And then just not... giving any other indication that it is a holiday.

Sunny-Day Dinners

So... everypony is just living together in Sunny's house now? I'm not sure why they'd have to. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to get their own homes?

The unicorn raccoons are fighting over garbage. Like, actual garbage. For such whimsical beings, they sure have realistic and disgusting habits.

Sunny is upset everyone missed her breakfast and thinks they are drifting apart... of which there is zero evidence. I mean, they're friends, but they're not a family, and that's what this episode seems to be going for. I'm not sure what to make of the characterization here.

Okay, missing breakfast because you're busy is one thing, but accepting an invite to a hike and then just no-showing, that's just rude.

I can't really tell if this would be in or out of character for these ponies, either. The annoying thing about these shorts is that they are missing a ton of context, both plot and characterwise. How can I tell how serious the situation is supposed to be if I don't know how these ponies would act normally? And how can I tell whether they are drifting apart when I haven't really seen them bond all that much to begin with?

A road marker is broken, and Sunny's solution is... spin it until it points one way or the other. For sucha supposedly smart pony, that is a really dumb idea.

Annnd suddenly all the others remember. Wait, since when is Pipp a hairdresser?

Also, if Izzy and Sunny went the wrong way, then how would the others know to look in the forest, when that wasn't where they were going in the first place?

They find each other and have a fun evening anyway. Don't ask how they get home, though, they're still lost. And there's more rapping. I guess that's going to be a thing now.

Maretime Bay Day 2.0

Ooh look, earth pony magic confirmed.

And then Izzy deletes all the blooper files Pipp was going to use for a social post. Pipp is genuinely upset, which is the most actual feels I've gotten from this series so far. Of course it all has to be resolved in all of five minutes, so it isn't going to go that deeply, but it's something, at least.

So to cheer Pipp up, the others recreate Maretime Bay Day in the garden (which they have now, apparently). There's even a song.

It's rather short, but this is probably one of the better shorts so far.

Do you guys want me to review more like this? This miniseries feels a bit like side content to the main show that hasn't aired yet.

Also, this miniseries seems to be a bit spoilery for the main show, with some details that were clearly going to be plot points in the main show, like earth ponies finding their magic.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

would make it feel a bit like the G4 thread in its heyday at least.

It would actually be crazy if the unicorn spy was actually the starscream. Or maybe she undergoes a Face–Heel Turn and becomes a reverse Scorpan. The latter probably won't happen as it's too cynical for this franchise but I can dream can I?

As well as a total of six, so as to bring back the Elements of Harmony and nail Opaline with rainbow lasers.

Plus when sidekick unicorn was first shown alongside our new Big Bad, she kind of looked like she didn't want to be there - as if she may have been coerced, manipulated, or conned into going along with whatever evil plot is going on as opposed to holding any sincere loyalty to the side of evil. Which would be understandable if she's going to become part of the main cast - the writers may not be comforable letting her start out too bad.

Looking good. The animation seems to have stepped up a little from the special. And it seems our villains aren't going to be wasting any time. And I definitely didn't expect to see Twilight appear (even as a hologram).
