Emoticons are a way to convey information about a story. That is Paratext. So they are tropes.

I'd argue Emoticons are more of typographical language than a story-telling convention. A good place for this would be the "Language" folder of Useful Notes. Also, there appears to be no real trope here, just "emoticon(s) appears in a work".
