Well, I broke and started reading the manga. Holy crap, it's good. Can't wait to see it animated.

My Best Girl rankings have also shuffled around quite a lot, but I'm still pulling for Everybody Wins.

It's been fun.

So long as you recognize Yotsuba's dominance as Best Girl, all else is understandable.

I say, having seen only one episode and never touched the manga.

The rating is very messy, and it's shaking out in ways I didn't expect. I'm also not sure where to expect they're planning to end the anime season - the first episode covered the first two chapters pretty closely, so around chapter 25 or 30 or so, probably?

Well, that's me caught up. Why did I rush?! Now I have no one to talk to about it! ...I'm open to PMs if anyone else here is caught up.

You could just start a thread for manga readers.

If we get demand for it in this thread that's not a bad idea, I think.

I would like it. I don't want to do it myself because I'm not actually fully caught up, but I'd like to get my shipping feels out.

Okay, I'll set it up, then. As long as folks are careful about spoilertagging with chapter numbers, it should be fine! I want to hear your thoughts. =)

It's been fun.

So unfortunately, the character designs for the anime really do make it very obvious when the sisters are posing as each other - though so far their outfits do that, too. Just something to live with, I guess.

It's been fun.

Yeah. Then again, as you say, there were other clues in this particular case that made it obvious. Even Fuutarou managed to point one of them out.

The amazing escape was a lot funnier in animation than in still images. I'm yet again reminded of how silly Miku can be.

And overall, I think they've done a good job with expressions and translating the manga to anime. Well, sometimes it's a little too obvious that some key frames and still shots are lifted directly from the manga, for better or worse.

Yotsuba comes across better in the anime. I didn't particularly care for her (not that I don't like her) in the manga, but she's more fun in the anime.

But as I've mentioned, Miku's great. She's a good mix of cautious, silly, and passionate.

Having seen the second episode, I can still safely say Yotsuba is best girl, but Miku is inching up on the second place. She's an adorable dork, that one.

Also, were some shots in that episode very clearly stills lifted from the manga, or am I just imagining things?

I suppose the five girls will have nice moments at some point.

[up][up]I just mentioned the part about the stills above you. tongue

[up]More or less. I wish some could've gotten more focus, but that's probably later in the manga. On the whole I find it reasonably even. But it's not something you can really tell until the entire thing is over.

Miku is slowly inching forward.

There will be some more focus mini-arcs for the various girls, yes. We should hit one for most, if not all, of them by the end of the anime, if the latest thing shown in the OP is going to be covered.

So I watch the two episodes. I gotta admit that's a pretty funny series; the MC has a more vivid personality than usual in harem shows and the girls are distinct enough from each other without being too one-note (at least those we have focused on). Of course you have the Ms. Fanservice, the Haughty one, the Shy one, the Hyper one and the Tsundere, but Miku and Itsuki at least have shown a good deal of nuance. Also, I must thank the author for making the girls' names easy to remember − hell, I had guessed Yotsuba's name before she even said it. tongue

All in all, this feels like a slightly more adult version of We Never Learn (or the other way round, not sure which one started first).

From what I hear, the biggest complaint leveled against that one is that nothing ever actually happens and it's stuck in harem stasis. In contrast, Quintuplets has a pretty good pace to it, yeah.

It's been fun.

So we're avoiding Nisekoi-itis. That's good.

[up][up]They started the same year. I don't know the exact month, though.

Enforced harem stasis — the biggest cause of dense protagonists.

We don't have that here. He's not more dense than can be expected. He is socially awkward, and doesn't catch everything, but he's not downright dense.

Useuegi having such a defined personality actually helps his chemistry with the girls. Hell, he even has a goal that goes beyond simply being just a nice guy.

His density even makes sense since he's spent more time studying than actually interacting with people.

The part about having goals other than being part of the harem is something a lot of harem series seem to forget. Most characters that don't seem to have motivations outside that are flat and generally boring.

There's nothing wrong with doing things out of pure altruism, but there needs to be more for the character to feel like an actual character.

That's what most harem leads lack, they're blatantly just used as wish-fulfillment and nothing else.

Hell, Usegui kind of hates the fact that he has to deal with his harem's bullshit while dealing with his own. It's such a minor but relatable thing.

I really like how the characters interact with each other like humans, honestly. Uesugi has no loyalty to the sisters right now since he's after the paycheck and is too proud to walk away, he's not afraid to call the girls on their BS, and he jumps to conclusions about their own motivations, as well - like with the scene with Miku on the stairwell. The plot follows the characters' reactions instead of the other way around.

One thing that really jumped out at me that we'll see soon is the way Nino backslides after Uesugi wins her over the first time. It's such a natural thing, but you almost never see shows do that.

It's been fun.

I read ahead to that and it was so great. We'll see that next episode.

It makes you think "Oh this is when she starts to warm up to him" only to give a big emphatic "NOPE". Its just really nice that show understands that building a good rapport takes time...especially with someone as socially inept and abrasive as Uesugi.
