Google assures me that the note at the end reads Makima can hear you. The day of doom is near. Kill Makima.

Anyway, this chapter was fucking dope. Dunno how stealing arms relates to darkness, but I can't wait to see where this goes.

So all this was just a roundabout way to kill Makima.

Send a bunch of people to Hell to strike up a deal with a primal being all just to find a way to kill her.

(The detail that people keep being like MAKIMA CAN HEAR YOU is actually really scary, in that it seems everyone knows she is constantly listening so only written messages are safe.)

I don't think she's the Gun Devil, but she's clearly SOMETHING terrifying enough that contracting a Primal Fear seems necessary to have a chance at challenging her.

The sheer lengths people are willing to go through to get a shot at killing Makima is extremely interesting. I really want to find out more. The transcendent devils of primal fears is a cool bit of worlbuilding that makes a lot of sense, and the Darkness Devil's design is absolutely sick.

Yeah, Makima acted as though she was afraid of Santa Claus. But it turns out to be totally different, going to such extreme lengths to obtain a power that might be able to take Makima down. Plus it seems like EVERYONE wants her dead.

Darkness is just....wow. It's such a bizarre design that it's hard to describe it to people or really grasp just what you're looking at. I wonder if the other Primal Fears will be...well...some of the ones listed in the trope.

(We have Blood and Spider represented but they seem to be ordinary devils, not Primal Fears like Darkness.)

So would Makima be something like a disease/plague devil?

Yeah… as in, it makes me sick.

Makima being the Gun Devil was a tempting theory until now, but we just got told that the Gun Devil is actually not even a big shot in the Underworld.

The Gun Devil not being a big shot in Hell is massive Fridge Brilliance.

Guns are a very recent device created by man, unlike darkness it is not something innately primal or as ancient so in comparison to the primal forces it is essentially a baby.

It really, really is.

I'm not certain whether I think Makima is a Devil or just someone with some very horrifying Contracts. But she's someone that is an enemy/rival to the Gun Devil, based on what its minions have said concerning her. What little we know concerning her is that many of the Devils and Fiends that work for her are either terrified of her or feel indebted to her. Shark and Angel are both keeping secrets on her orders, and unwilling to say anything for fear she will hear. (Which we know now is a power she has, with even international devil hunters being like SHE'S LISTENING)

Spider and Violence both treat her with respect, with the later seeming to think she saved him.

She wants Chainsaw at her side, and everyone else wants him as well. Including Darkness, it seems.

I'm curious what the other Primal Fears will be, since we've had plenty of the trope's examples shown as regular Devils. And yeah, it seems a lot of the Modern Devils are young but have become incredibly powerful very fast because of their prominence in the modern mind — Chainsaw, Gun, Bomb all being relatively new inventions.

I do wonder, does fear of god count as really scary thing or not? ;P

It is kinda weird that Violence isn't a Primal. Most living things have some fear of violence unless they're one of those island only species that have no predators.

Here is one Primal Fear that I'm 100% certain everyone dreads.

The definition of primal fear in this case is just "devil that never got ganked in hell." Violence could have run afoul of the Death Devil or something.

Or "Violence" in this case could mean something more specific than comes across in Japanese, I dunno.

Though I'm waiting for the day when his mask gets removed, since there's no way you drop a detail like "his gasmask is a Power Limiter" and not have that come up eventually.

It also bears mentioning that he both is weakened by the mask and by being a fiend. Entirely possible that the original Violence Devil was Bad News.

Absolutely. Thinking about it, both Violence and Power are in a significantly weakened state at all times, to restrain them. Violence wears the gasmask that constantly poisons him, Power is drained of blood if she consumes too much. They're both still strong, but Makima intentionally keeps them on a certain level and doesn't allow their natural powers to get any stronger.

There's no point in letting your pawns get strong enough to object when you want something after all.

The Darkness Devil may be one of the most fucked up creatures I've seen in a manga (let alone a Shonen Manga) in quite a while, up there with some of the foulest creatures from Made in Abyss.

So, err, I guess Violence finally taking his mask off and getting one-shot anyway is another fuck you to shonen clichés.

Chainsaw Man: Fuck your cliches, we're here for ball-kicking tournaments and going on vacation.

but spare Power, can't have all cliches gone.

So to tally:

• Denji, Aki, Power, Angel, and Kobeni are still alive-ish. Denji and Power are down, Darkness seems to be focusing on Aki now.
• Beam and Violence are best boys, which is why they had to die apparently.
