The next chapter went on sale today, and I couldn't resist using my lunch break to go get it.

Spoiler summary ahead! The sempai are in Kyoto for their school trip, leaving Yuu, Maki and Dojima to rattle around the clubhouse not doing much of anything. Yuu is still feeling down over Touko, which Maki notices. Then the viewpoint switches to Sayaka, who is agonizing over her decision to take the step forward and tell Touko how she feels. She decides that she is going to tell her, but can't find a time for the two of them to be alone together. The class visits Kiyomizu Temple and some of them pull fortunes; Sayaka thinks to herself that she doesn't like things that can't be influenced by personal effort, and doesn't want to draw Misfortune anyway. However, she is swayed by the Love-Fortune Stone, which is a stone on temple grounds where, if you close your eyes and make it between the two rocks (about 10m) without wandering off-track, your love will be successful, supposedly. Sayaka manages to make it with Touko's guidance.

Summary cont. Sayaka is still nervous, but she seizes a chance to be alone with Touko on the rooftop garden of a nearby building, where they look out over the city. Sayaka thinks how beautiful Touko is, but before she can speak Touko tells her not to. Touko says that she's not as perfect as Sayaka thinks she is, and warns her that she can't live up to Sayaka's expectations; Sayaka insists that she knows more about Touko than Touko is giving her credit for. "True, at first I loved you because you were perfect. You were better than me, saw further than me. I wanted to walk alongside you. So, when I saw the weakness you hide, I thought I would be disillusioned... But you truly are beautiful. I love you even more than I thought I did. I love everything about you." Touko seems hesitant, but doesn't reply before they're interrupted by classmates calling them back to assembly. Sayaka asks Touko to give her her answer as they go, and as their group is in bed for the night, Sayaka thinks to herself that she doesn't regret confessing, and wonders what will happen tomorrow.

It's been fun.

Okay, last episode tonight! I'm gonna go ahead and predict that they're adapting the aquarium visit from... I wanna say it's a chapter or so ahead of the last episode.

It's been fun.

…I didn't expect this last episode to be so impactful considering the chapters they adapted didn't seem that special compared to last episode… but they really did an excellent job at making this episode feel semi-conclusive despite ending mid-story. Even if there's no season 2, you can still sorta get where the story's going just with the extra-bits of foreshadowing they included, so it doesn't feel abrupt. That whole ending sequence with Yuu taking Touko's hand towards the light was simply beautiful. Ending the episode on Yuu sending a title idea (that was mistranslated in the subs…) to Koyomi was clever too. "Time to change trains"…

The song sung by the two V As at the end was also pretty nice.

PS: Re-reading the chap, that little shot Sayaka took at Miyako wasn't in the manga. That was pretty funny. XD

Hmm, yeah, that is a bit of a mistranslation, huh. Should be 'I Only Know You' or similar, yeah? As in, I don't know who you were before, I only know the you that I first met. I guess it makes sense, since that's kind of a shit title for a play in English. I wonder if the translator hasn't read that far yet and doesn't know what the new version of the play is actually about.

Also, I don't remember that last scene feeling so... happy. I guess they wanted to change it to wrap things up a little more instead of Yuu's growing awareness that the current state of affairs can't last forever.

They definitely made the scene a little happier, though I'm not sure what made me feel that way. The warm colors and music, I guess. As for the title…

Finally read the anthology. Finally read the anthology. All of the stories were great in their own way, but my favorite was probably "Let's Write a Script", about the early ideas for the play. Everyone ends up doing their little fanfic while Koyomi is like "Yeah, maybe I should write this alone."

My other favorites would be "Bitter Coffee Time" about Riko and Miyako (because any scene with these two is gold) and "Let's Play with Senpai!" although sadly we don't get to see maid!Touko.

Huh, yeah, that scene in the aquarium of Yuu and Touko practicing their lines is completely original. It might make continuing the adaptation a bit bumpy in the next chapter or two, given how resistant Touko is to the new script originally. I think the intention is probably to have Yuu ease her into the idea, rather than springing it on her, which does change the dynamic a bit in ways I'm not really confident I can articulate.

It's been fun.

Chap 37 is out.

"Now go straight…" I hope it's not a bad premonition. >.>

I loved this chapter so much. Sayaka confessed in a way that fits her: with courage and resolution, despite her apprehension. The best part of the chap was Touko seeing it coming and telling her to stop, but Sayaka pressing on like "Don't fuck with me. I mean, yes, please do." Her gestures, her tone, her words, it was all so sweet…

It might seem to come at the worst moment, but it might be for the best. Touko now has to consider that there are two people who love her for who she is, flaws included, and maybe she'll start to see how… arrogant it was of her to think only her perfect self deserved to be loved.

Yeah, definitely. I'm thinking that this will likely end up being the catalyst that pushes Touko to straighten things out with Yuu; I think our best-case scenario is that Sayaka ends up rejected but supportive, and I'd put money on the chapter ending with Touko on the bus back to Tokyo.

That or we're getting a Yuu-centric chapter, which I don't think we actually have for a while.

Man. I still wish a poly end was in sight, though. It would be so cute.

It's been fun.

I'd love a polyamory ending as well, though it doesn't seem likely to me. Would still love to be pleasantly surprised though.

A yuri manga that I recently read, Kanaete! Yuri Yousei, has a chapter where a love triangle is resolved through polyamory. Polyamory could've solved so many love triangles...

[up]Oooo! I'll need to check that one out!

Normally I'm all for the poly ending in a love triangle.

But not really in this case note  for some reason?

Perhaps it's because the series has done a far far far greater than average job at showing us exactly what makes Yuu and Touko tick?

Or maybe its just the maturity? with which the relationships are portrayed.

@32nd: Yeah, I get what you mean. Doing that would be very difficult, and would also disrupt a lot of the imagery and so on - the series would have to take half again as much time as it already has in order to handle Yuu-Sayaka with as much depth as Sayaka-Touko, let alone Yuu/Touko. So I don't see it happening.

But in the comfortable realm of fanworks, I can't get enough.

It's been fun.

[up] Basically. It sounds nice as a fanfic, but it's unlikely and would be extremely hard to pull off in the main story. It's not easy to write in the first place − real lesbian relationships are aplenty, but I assume real and functional polyamory relationships are extremely rare.

By the way, the first two stories of the anthology are out on the Dex, for those interested. =]

Well, the newest chapter is out, and they didn't switch back to the underclassmen.

Even knowing this was coming, that was rough. But they stuck it through, the air is cleared, and Touko has newfound determination.

It's been fun.

That was beautifully done. With lesbian ducks and all. tongue

Knowing not only that Touko loves Yuu, but her own rejected confession might be instrumental to bringing Touko and Yuu together… that's gotta hurt.

By the way, the anthology is now fully translated. The last story is strangely relevant to the latest chapter…

Saw the latest chapter recently. Farewell my desired polyamory ending.

Though hopefully, given the last panel, the current conflict will quickly reach a resolution. Looking forward to seeing how Touko handles Yuu.

Here's a fun thing: those ducks, assuming they're the same species, have been used as a metaphor for eternal love (since they mate for life) since the Heian Period. Including, as I wrote a paper on once, in correspondence and love poems between women - namely Murasaki Ichibu and Sei Shonagon (though not with each other because they kind of hated each other, as far as we can tell). In particular, Sei exchanged poems with her Lady, Empress Teishi, that used the ducks being lonely without their mates to express how sad Sei and Teishi were to be apart from each other.

Touko, being an outstanding student, would of course know that.

^There's always doujinshi, and something could still grow there even with Yuu and Touko together - with Yuu's knowledge and agreement, of course. Which would be the more difficult part, and wouldn't happen until Touko and Yuu's relationship is settled and stable and has been for a while.

Chapter 39: where Maki reminds us that he exists. tongue Being a spectator doesn't stop him from giving some advice to one of the actors.

And in the last few pages, I started to hear the voice of Whitney Houston. tongue

Of all the chapters to take a break after, they had to pick that particular one. Ah well, here's hoping we get a satisfactory resolution once the new chapter comes out. Looking forward to it!

[up][up]Is it bad that when you mentioned Sei and Murasaki, I immediately thought of their fictional portrayals in Kimi no Tame nara Shineru by Kuzushiro (creator of Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, for those unfamiliar)?

@Dragonfire: Not at all. How is the series, by the way? I've seen it in bookstores but never actually looked into it.

And yeah, at this point I'm just hoping that Touko doesn't get hit by a car or something.

It's been fun.

I'm reminded of a yuri manga that nearly had one of the main characters hit by a truck, only for her love interest to grab her out of the way bridal style in the nick of time. Some of the "LOL No isekai" comments that came out of it were pretty funny.

[up][up]If you're familiar with Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, you kind of know what to expect. I think it is a tad skeevier at times though, considering Sei is 28 and crushing hard on a 14 year old Teishi (even if nothing sexual happens between them, as far as I can tell). Still good for a couple laughs, and one I would encourage any Kuzushiro fan to check out.

So the latest chapter just came out. Got to say, the ending where they finally confess to each other is beautiful.

Also, apparently the manga is ending in November. Going to be a tad sad when it finally ends, but also happy that it had a good run.
